Manuel Velez Pangilinan (born July 14, 1946), often called Manny Pangilinan or MVP, is a well-known Filipino businessman. He is also a big supporter of sports in the Philippines. He is the main boss (managing director and CEO) of First Pacific Company Limited, a large company based in Hong Kong. This company invests in many businesses across Asia.

Manny Pangilinan also leads First Pacific's investments in the Philippines. These include big companies like Metro Pacific Investments Corporation, PLDT, and Philex Mining Corporation. He used to be the first president of the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP), which is the main group for basketball in the Philippines. He served two terms from 2007 to 2018 and is now their Chairman Emeritus.

His School Days

Manny Pangilinan finished his elementary and high school education at San Beda. He then went to the Ateneo de Manila University. He graduated with high honors (cum laude) with a degree in Economics.

Later, Manny Pangilinan won a special scholarship from Procter & Gamble. This allowed him to study at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. He earned his Master of Business Administration degree there in 1968.

His Career Journey

Manny Pangilinan's first job was at a company called Philippine Investment Management Consultants, Inc. (PHINMA). He worked there for six years as an executive assistant.

In 1976, he moved to Hong Kong. There, he worked at an investment bank called Bancom International. This job helped him learn a lot about money and business around the world. After that, he worked as an investment banker at American Express in Hong Kong.

In 1981, Manny Pangilinan helped start First Pacific in Hong Kong. He started it with Sudono Salim and his son, Anthoni Salim. In 1987, he created Metro Pacific. This company became First Pacific's main way to invest in the Philippines.

As the chairman of Metro Pacific, Manny Pangilinan has helped the country a lot. His company has made big investments in important services. These include:

  • Power distribution and new energy ideas (Meralco)
  • Water services in cities (Maynilad Water Services)
  • Toll roads (Metro Pacific Tollways Corporation)
  • Improving hospitals and health services (Metro Pacific Investments Corporation)

He is also the chairman of TV5, a TV network, and Philex Mining Corporation.

In 1998, First Pacific bought PLDT. This is the biggest telecommunications company in the Philippines. PLDT used to have many problems with debt and old technology. But under First Pacific's leadership, it became the country's top provider of digital communication services.

Manny Pangilinan is a huge supporter of Philippine sports. He grew up in a family that loved basketball. His mother was a big fan of the San Beda Red Lions basketball team. His father also played basketball, baseball, and tennis. Manny Pangilinan himself enjoys playing badminton.

He owns three teams in the PBA: the TNT KaTropa, the Meralco Bolts, and the NLEX Road Warriors. He also started the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP), which is the national group for basketball in the Philippines. He was the first president of SBP for two terms, from 2007 to 2016. Now, he is the chairman emeritus of SBP.

In 2014, he was chosen to be on the Central Board of FIBA, which is the world's basketball organization. He served there until August 2023. Also, his MVP Sports Foundation has helped many other Filipino athletes. Some of these athletes even won gold medals in the 2018 Asian Games.
