Manuel de Ascázubi y Matheu was an important leader in Ecuador during the 1800s. He was born in 1804 and passed away in 1876. He held several key positions in the government. These included serving as Vice President of Ecuador and even as the interim President of Ecuador for a short time.

Manuel de Ascázubi's Early Life

Manuel de Ascázubi y Matheu was born in Quito, which is now the capital city of Ecuador. At that time, Quito was part of the Spanish Empire. His family was well-known and owned a lot of land.

Even though his family had important titles, Manuel chose to support Ecuador's independence. This meant he wanted Ecuador to be free from Spanish rule. He married Carmen Salinas de la Vega. Her father, Juan de Salinas, was one of the first leaders to rebel against Spain. Manuel and Carmen had four daughters.

Because Manuel was involved in the independence movement, the Spanish rulers caused problems for him and his family. They faced difficulties both politically and financially.
