Manuel Álvarez-Uría Rico-Villademoros is a Spanish scientist who studies cells. He was the president of the Royal Academy of Medicine of the Principality of Asturias in Spain for over ten years, until 2015. He has won some of Spain's top awards for medical research. Manuel was born in Oviedo, Spain, on July 1, 1943.

His Education Journey

Manuel Álvarez-Uría studied Medicine and Surgery at the University of Valladolid, finishing in 1966. He then earned his advanced Doctor of Medicine degree from the Complutense University of Madrid. He continued his studies even further at famous universities in Paris and Harvard.

His Career and Research

From 1967 to 1977, Manuel Álvarez-Uría was a professor of Histology (the study of tissues) at several universities in Spain, including Complutense and Autonomous Universities of Madrid. In 1977, he became a professor of Cytology (the study of cells) at the University of Salamanca.

His research team carefully studied the tiny structures inside cells, especially in areas like the Harderian gland and special nerve cells in the brains of animals like hamsters. This work helped scientists understand more about how cells and nerves work.

While he was a leader at the Royal Academy of Medicine of the Principality of Asturias, he helped create an important award. This award, called the International Hippocrates Prize, recognizes great medical research on how human nutrition affects our health.

Manuel Álvarez-Uría has held many important leadership roles, including:

  • Director of the University School of Nursing at the University of Oviedo.
  • Director of the School of Sports Medicine at the University of Oviedo.
  • Director of the Department of Morphology and Cellular Biology at the University of Oviedo.
  • Vice-Rector for Students at the University of Oviedo.

He also represented the University of Oviedo in many important groups, like the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology. He even wrote a book about the famous scientist Santiago Ramón y Cajal with Gabino González-González.

Awards and Special Honors

Manuel Álvarez-Uría has received several high honors for his work:

  • He won the National Research Award "Gregorio Marañón" in 1972.
  • In 1973, he received the National Research Award "Santiago Ramón y Cajal." He shared this award with researcher Gabino González González for their studies on the neuroendocrine system, which involves how nerves and hormones work together.
  • In 2007, his alma mater (the university he attended) chose him to give the special Inaugural Lecture to open the new academic year for all Spanish universities. This important event was held at the University of Oviedo and was attended by the King and Queen of Spain and other important people. It was a big honor, especially since it marked the university's 400th anniversary.
