History of Mapleton
Mapleton was officially marked out and planned in 1857. This happened when the railroad lines reached this area. The city got its name because it is located close to the Maple River.
The 2011 Tornado
On April 9, 2011, between 7:20 and 7:30 p.m., a strong tornado hit Mapleton. This tornado was rated as an EF3, which means it was quite powerful. It tore through the western part of the city. Early reports said that about half of the town was damaged or destroyed. The tornado was very wide, about three-quarters of a mile across. Luckily, no one was seriously hurt, even though many homes and businesses were damaged.

Public schools in Mapleton are managed by the Maple Valley–Anthon–Oto Community School District.
School History
The first school in the Mapleton area, East Mapleton Township School, was started in 1858. An independent school district was officially created on May 5, 1880. Voters approved money to build a new school, which opened in 1880. Another new school building was opened around 1903.
Later, in 1916, the Mapleton Consolidated School District was formed. They bought land for another new school, which opened in October 1918. A building for vocational training (learning job skills) was added in 1927.
In 1955, the Mapleton Community School District joined with the Ticonic Independent School District. In 1961, the Mapleton Community School District merged into the Maple Valley Community School District. Then, on July 1, 2012, the Maple Valley district combined with the Anthon–Oto Community School District. This created the current Maple Valley–Anthon–Oto Community School District.
