History of Maplewood
Maplewood was founded around the early 1900s. It was one of the first suburbs of St. Louis. People could easily travel there using streetcar lines and major railroads.
A Community for Families
Maplewood was built as a "bedroom community." This means it was a place where people lived and slept, but often traveled to the bigger city for work. Back then, cities were often smoky from burning coal. Advertisements encouraged people to move to Maplewood for its fresh air and less crowded spaces. Many of the homes built between 1900 and 1910 are still standing today. Some of these homes have even stayed in the same family for many years!
Modern Maplewood
Today, Maplewood is becoming a lively place again. New restaurants, shops, and businesses are opening up, especially around Manchester Avenue and Sutton Avenue.
In 2018, Maplewood changed one of its local rules. Before this, if someone called the police for help more than twice in 180 days, they could face eviction from their home. This rule was changed to make sure everyone feels safe calling for help when they need it.
In 2021, the people of Maplewood elected Nikylan Knapper as their mayor. She made history as the city's first Black mayor.
