History of the Mall

Maplewood Mall was built by the Homart Development Company. It first opened in 1974. When it opened, its main stores were Sears and Powers Dry Goods. The mall had about 120 stores at that time. Some of these stores were Juster's and Field-Schlick.

In 1996, a new store called Dayton's opened at the mall. This was the first Dayton's store to open in the Twin Cities since 1978. The Dayton's store took over the space where Carson's used to be. Over time, this store changed its name to Marshall Field's. Today, it is known as Macy's.

Getting Around

A special bus station opened near the mall in 2004. It is called a Metro Transit hub. This hub has 425 parking spots for people who want to park their cars and take the bus.

The mall opens two hours before the stores do. This allows people to walk inside for exercise. It is a great way to stay active in a comfortable place.

Future Plans

The state of Minnesota has plans for a new bus line. It will be a bus rapid transit (BRT) line. This new line is called the "Rush Line." It will travel from Downtown Saint Paul. The line will pass by Maplewood Mall and go all the way to White Bear Lake.

Past Changes

In 2015, the company that owned Sears made some changes. They created a new company called Seritage Growth Properties. This new company took over many Sears properties, including the Sears store at Maplewood Mall. The Sears store at this mall closed in July 2018.
