María de la Asunción Uriz Mosquera (born August 21, 1946), known as María Uriz, is a talented Spanish soprano singer. A soprano is a type of classical singer who can sing very high notes. She is famous for her beautiful voice and for performing in many operas and concerts.

About María Uriz's Life

María Uriz was born in A Coruña, a city in Spain. When she was younger, she studied piano, chamber music (music for a small group of instruments), and acting at a music school in her hometown. Her brother, who sang in a choir, encouraged her to explore the world of opera. Opera is a type of play where the story is told mostly through singing, often with costumes, scenery, and an orchestra.

After her first steps into opera, María decided to focus on singing. She finished her studies at the Conservatori Superior de Música del Liceu in Barcelona, a famous music school.

Early Career and Training

In the 1970s, María received special scholarships, like the March and Castellblanch scholarships. These awards helped her travel to Italy to continue her singing studies. She also won other important scholarships and a singing prize.

During this time, she was invited to perform at important official gatherings. For four years, she studied in Milan, Italy, with the famous soprano Elvira de Hidalgo. Elvira de Hidalgo was also the teacher of the legendary singer Maria Callas, so María Uriz learned from one of the best!

María Uriz made her official debut as a singer in 1974. After that, she became a regular performer at the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona, which is a very important opera house. She has performed in many different operas there.
