The Story of Sabrett

The Sabrett story began in 1928. A man named Samuel Ogus started a bakery called Star Baking Company. He worked with a partner, Fritz Frankel. Samuel was great at running the factory and even designed machines. Fritz was good at sales and talking to customers.

In the 1930s, they saw that many people wanted hot dog rolls. They became a huge hot dog roll maker! Then, they decided to make hot dogs too. They wanted to call their new meat company "Star," but another company already used that name.

They tried "Sabre" next, but there was also a "Sabre" tuna fish company! So, they finally chose "Sabrett." This name means "a little saber," which is like a small, sharp sword. It sounded perfect! The company was first located in New York City.

During the Great Depression, hot dogs were very popular. You could get a meal for only twenty-five cents! Sabrett moved its bakery and hot dog factory to Jersey City in the late 1940s.

Sabrett became famous for its spicy, all-beef hot dogs. Many hot dog carts in New York City bought their hot dogs only from Sabrett. These carts were independently owned, meaning people ran their own businesses.

Big customers like Nathan's Famous in Coney Island and Papaya King also bought Sabrett hot dogs. Sabrett eventually started selling its products in supermarkets and expanded across the country.

Over the years, the company stayed in the family. Samuel Ogus and Fritz Frankel's family members helped run the business for more than thirty years. In 1989, Sabrett was sold to Gregory Papalexis of Marathon Industries. Marathon kept the Sabrett name because it was so well-known for hot dogs in New York City.
