Marayong is a suburb located in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. It's about 32 kilometres north-west of the Sydney city centre. Marayong is part of the City of Blacktown area, which is in the wider Greater Western Sydney region.
Marayong's History and Name
The name 'Marayong' comes from the Dharug language. The word 'Mariyung' means emu or place of cranes. This name was first used for the railway station. The station opened in October 1922.
Around 1900 to 1905, large pieces of land were divided up. People started market gardens and poultry farms here. This area was once part of Quakers Hill. But in 1926, a group called the Marayong Progress Association asked for Marayong to be its own suburb.
The area was mostly countryside until the 1960s. Then, new public housing estates were built. These homes helped Marayong become more urban, especially south of the railway line. An industrial area was also developed north of the railway line.
