Marc Fumaroli (born June 10, 1932, in Marseille, France – died June 24, 2020, in Paris, France) was a famous French historian and essayist. An essayist is someone who writes short pieces of writing called essays. He was known for his deep knowledge of history and literature.
Fumaroli was chosen to join the Académie française on March 2, 1995. This is a very important group in France that protects the French language. He even became its Director, which is a top leadership role. He was also a member of the Académie des Inscriptions, another important French academy.
After teaching at the University of Paris-IV, La Sorbonne, he became a professor at the Collège de France. He taught about rhetoric and society in Europe from the 16th and 17th centuries. He held this position from 1986 until he retired in 2002.
