Marcel Hirscher (born 2 March 1989) is a famous alpine ski racer. He was born in Austria but now races for the Netherlands. Marcel started his World Cup career in March 2007. He mainly competed in slalom and giant slalom, which are technical ski races. He also sometimes raced in combined events and super-G.

Marcel Hirscher is known for winning a record eight World Cup titles in a row. Many people, including other top skiers, consider him the best alpine skier ever. He won 11 medals at the FIS Alpine World Ski Championships, with seven of them being gold. He also earned a silver medal at the 2014 Winter Olympics and two gold medals at the 2018 Winter Olympics. Marcel won a total of 67 World Cup races, which puts him second on the all-time list for male skiers.

Marcel Hirscher's Skiing Journey

Marcel Hirscher showed his talent early on. At the 2010 Winter Olympics, he finished fourth in giant slalom and fifth in slalom. He also placed fourth in giant slalom at the 2009 World Championships. Sadly, he broke his ankle before the 2011 World Championships, which ended his season early.

Returning Stronger: 2012 Season

After his injury, Marcel had an amazing 2012 season. He won 9 races and reached the podium 14 times. These wins were mostly in technical events like slalom and giant slalom. He won the overall World Cup title that year and also the giant slalom title. He finished third in the slalom standings. In October 2012, ski journalists gave him the Skieur d'Or Award for his great performance.

Winning Streak: 2013 to 2016

Marcel continued his success in 2013, winning the overall World Cup title again. He had 6 victories and won the slalom title. He was also second in giant slalom. He became the first male skier in a long time to win the overall World Cup title three years in a row.

In 2015, Marcel was especially strong in giant slalom, winning 5 races. He won the giant slalom title for the second time. He also won the slalom title for the third year in a row. This made him the first male alpine skier to win the overall World Cup title four times in a row.

The 2016 season was also fantastic for Marcel. He won 8 races and reached the podium 19 times. He secured his fifth straight overall World Cup title, a feat no other male skier had achieved before. He was the only Austrian male skier to win a race that season.

More Victories: 2017 and 2018

In the 2017 season, Marcel kept breaking records. He won his 40th World Cup race in Levi, Finland. He also reached his 100th podium finish in Adelboden, Switzerland. At the FIS Alpine World Ski Championships 2017 in St. Moritz, he won gold medals in both giant slalom and slalom. He also took a silver medal in the combined event. He was the most successful athlete at those championships.

On 4 March 2017, Marcel won his sixth overall World Cup title. This made him the only male skier in history to do so. He also secured his fourth World Cup slalom title.

The start of the 2018 season was tough for Marcel. He fractured his left ankle in August. Despite this, he decided to race in Levi, Finland, and finished 17th. He quickly got back to his winning ways, taking third place in Val d'Isère and winning the slalom race the very next day.

On 17 December 2017, he won the giant slalom in Alta Badia for the fifth time in a row. This was a new record for that location. By January 2018, Marcel had won his 50th World Cup race in Zagreb, matching the legendary Alberto Tomba. He continued to win, reaching 54 World Cup victories, the same as Austrian ski legend Hermann Maier. He then became second overall in the men's World Cup winners rankings.

Olympic Glory and Retirement

At the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, Marcel won his first Olympic gold medal in the combined event. Just five days later, he won another gold in the giant slalom. His winning margin in the giant slalom was the biggest at the Olympics since 1968.

After the Olympics, Marcel continued his dominance. He secured his fifth giant slalom and fifth slalom crystal globes. He also won his seventh straight overall World Cup title. At the World Cup finals in Åre, he won his 13th race of the season. This tied the record for most wins in a single season, shared with Ingemar Stenmark and Hermann Maier.

In December 2018, Marcel became Austria's most successful World Cup race winner. He won his 63rd World Cup race, passing Annemarie Moser-Pröll. He won 14 World Cup races in 2018, setting a new record for wins in a calendar year. He was named L'Équipe Champion of Champions for 2018 and Eurosport's Sportsman of the Year.

At the FIS Alpine World Ski Championships 2019 in Åre, Marcel won a silver medal in giant slalom. He then won gold in the slalom, his seventh World Championship gold. This tied him with Toni Sailer for the most Worlds golds ever.

On 4 September 2019, Marcel Hirscher announced he was retiring from alpine skiing. He later became a TV presenter in Austria. Even though videos of him training appeared, he said he was not returning to competitive skiing.

New Beginnings: Van Deer-Red Bull and Comeback

In 2021, Marcel started his own ski brand called Van Deer. It later became Van Deer-Red Bull. This brand quickly became successful. His former rival, Henrik Kristoffersen, even used Van Deer-Red Bull skis to get a podium finish and a victory.

On 24 April 2024, Marcel Hirscher surprised everyone by announcing he planned to return to the World Cup circuit. He would now compete for the Netherlands, his mother's home country. He made his return on 27 October 2024, finishing 23rd in the giant slalom at Sölden. This was the first time a Dutch skier earned World Cup points since January 2022.
