A Look Back at Marcella's History
Marcella has an interesting past! Back in the 1830s, this area was known as Wallace Creek. At that time, what is now Stone County was actually part of Izard County.
How Arkansas Became a State
The land that would become Arkansas was first called the Arkansas Territory. This territory was created in 1828. It was formed from parts of the Missouri Territory. It also included land from the Cherokee Nation. Arkansas officially became the 25th state in the United States on June 15, 1836. At that time, it included some land that is now part of Oklahoma.
The Formation of Counties
Counties are like smaller sections within a state. They help organize the land and its people. Izard County, where Marcella was located, was established earlier, on October 27, 1825. It was formed from a part of Independence County.
Over time, new counties were created as more people moved into the area. For example, Baxter County was formed on March 24, 1873. It was made from parts of Fulton, Izard, Searcy, and Marion counties. Just a month later, on April 21, 1873, Stone County was established. Stone County was created from parts of Izard, Searcy, Independence, and Van Buren counties. This is how Marcella ended up in Stone County.
