Marcelo Camelo's Life Story
Growing Up and Early Music
Marcelo Camelo grew up in Rio de Janeiro. His parents were Ernesto and Ana Camelo, who was a naïve painter. Marcelo was the older brother to Thiago Camelo, who became a writer. His family had many artists and musicians, like his uncle Bebeto Castilho.
When he was young, Marcelo loved hard-rock bands like Bon Jovi and Skid Row. He learned to play the keyboard, drums, and guitar early on. Later, in college, he got into alternative rock music. He even helped create a fanzine (a fan-made magazine) called DooStraw.
Los Hermanos Band Years (1997–2007)
While studying journalism at the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro, Marcelo Camelo started playing music on stage. He was in a few bands before forming the group that would become Los Hermanos.
In 1997, Marcelo Camelo and Rodrigo Barba formed a band. They wanted to mix strong hardcore music with light songs about love. Other musicians, Bruno Medina, Rodrigo Amarante, and Patrick Laplan, joined them. They recorded their first songs, "Chora" and "Amor e Folia," that same year.
In 1999, Los Hermanos released their first album, also called Los Hermanos. Marcelo Camelo wrote most of the songs on it. The song "Anna Júlia" became a huge hit around the world. It even had an English version by Jim Capaldi.
In 2001, bassist Patrick Laplan left the band. The group then released their second album, Bloco do Eu Sozinho. This album had more thoughtful songs, mixing Samba, Bossa Nova, and other Latin music styles. Rodrigo Amarante also started writing more songs for the band on this album.
Their third album, Ventura, came out in 2003. This album was special because it was one of the first Brazilian albums to be shared online before it was officially released. Ventura showed how versatile Los Hermanos could be, with songs ranging from samba to pop rock. The band became very popular across Brazil.
In 2005, the band released their fourth album, 4. This album had a more personal feel and leaned more towards MPB. The song "O Vento," written by Rodrigo Amarante, was a big hit from this album.
Both Bloco do Eu Sozinho and Ventura are considered among the 100 greatest Brazilian albums by Rolling Stone magazine.
In April 2007, Los Hermanos announced they were taking a break. Since 2009, the band has reunited from time to time for special concerts and tours. Before 2007, Marcelo also wrote chronicles and poems on a blog for the G1 website.
Solo Music Career (2007–Present)
After Los Hermanos went on hiatus, Marcelo Camelo started his solo career. In 2008, he released his first solo album, called Sou. He first released it online. The album has 14 songs written by Marcelo. It also features guest artists like pianist Clara Sverner, singer Mallu Magalhães, and accordion player Dominguinhos. The song "Janta," which features Mallu Magalhães, was named the best song of 2008 by Brazilian Rolling Stone magazine.
In 2011, Marcelo released his second solo album, Toque Dela. He had started recording it in São Paulo but decided to change things and moved back to Rio de Janeiro to finish it.
Banda do Mar (2013–Present)
After Marcelo moved to Lisbon, Portugal, with his wife Mallu Magalhães, they formed a new band called Banda do Mar with drummer Fred Ferreira. They released their first album, Banda do Mar, in late 2014.
In 2018, Marcelo released his album Sinfonia Primitiva Nº 1. It was ranked as the 43rd best Brazilian album of that year by the Brazilian edition of Rolling Stone magazine.

Marcelo Camelo is married to the singer and composer Mallu Magalhães. They are also bandmates in Banda do Mar. In 2015, they welcomed their first child, a daughter named Luísa. They currently live in Portugal.
