About Marcelo Camelo
His Early Life
Marcelo Camelo was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. His father was Ernesto Camelo, and his mother, Ana Camelo, was a naïve painter. He grew up in the Jacarepaguá area of Rio.
Marcelo is the oldest child. His younger brother, Thiago Camelo, is a writer. Many people in his family are artists and musicians. His uncle, Bebeto Castilho, was also a musician.
From a young age, Marcelo loved music. He became a fan of hard-rock bands like Bon Jovi and Skid Row. He learned to play several instruments, including keyboard, drums, and guitar.
Joining Los Hermanos
While studying journalism at the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro, Marcelo started playing music on stage. He formed a few bands before creating Los Hermanos.
In 1997, Marcelo Camelo and Rodrigo Barba started a band. They wanted to mix strong hardcore music with light songs about love. Other musicians, Bruno Medina, Rodrigo Amarante, and Patrick Laplan, joined them. They recorded their first songs, "Chora" and "Amor e Folia," that year.
In 1999, Los Hermanos released their first album, also called "Los Hermanos." Marcelo wrote most of the songs on this album. The song "Anna Júlia" became a huge hit around the world. It even had an English version by Jim Capaldi.
In 2000, Marcelo won an award for "Anna Júlia" as the best song. He felt shy because he won over the famous musician Chico Buarque. He said he felt "ashamed to win a prize where Chico Buarque is competing."
In 2001, the band's bassist, Patrick Laplan, left the group. Los Hermanos then released their second album, "Bloco do Eu Sozinho." This album had more thoughtful songs. It mixed sounds from Samba, Bossa Nova, and other Latin music styles.
Rodrigo Amarante, another guitarist, started writing more songs for the band. Marcelo Camelo wrote the song "Todo Carnaval tem seu Fim." This song became the first single from the album.
In 2003, Los Hermanos released "Ventura." This album showed many different sides of the band's music. It had songs like "Samba a Dois" and "O Vencedor." "Ventura" helped the band become even more popular in Brazil.
The singer Maria Rita recorded three of Marcelo Camelo's songs. These were "Santa Chuva," "Cara Valente," and "Veja Bem Meu Bem." Los Hermanos' concerts started to attract many dedicated fans.
In 2005, the band released their fourth album, "4." This album had a more personal feel. It also had a stronger connection to MPB. The song "O Vento," written by Rodrigo Amarante, was a very popular single.
Both "Bloco do Eu Sozinho" and "Ventura" are considered important albums. They are on the list of the 100 greatest Brazilian music albums by Rolling Stone magazine.
In April 2007, Los Hermanos announced they would take a break. Since 2009, the band has reunited from time to time for special concerts and tours.
Solo Music Career
After Los Hermanos went on hiatus, Marcelo Camelo started his solo career. He released his first album, "Sou" (which means "I am" in English), in 2008. The album was first released online.
"Sou" has 14 songs written by Marcelo Camelo. Two songs feature the pianist Clara Sverner. Other guest artists on the album include Mallu Magalhães and the accordion player Dominguinhos. The song "Janta," which features Mallu, was named the best song of 2008 by Brazilian Rolling Stone magazine.
In 2010, Marcelo was working on his second solo album. He decided to change his plans and moved to São Paulo with his wife. Later, he moved back to Rio de Janeiro. He said that he needed a different feeling for his music. His second album, "Toque Dela," was released in 2011.
Forming Banda do Mar
After moving to Lisbon, Portugal, with his wife Mallu Magalhães, they started a new band. They teamed up with drummer Fred Ferreira to form Banda do Mar. Their first album, also called "Banda do Mar," came out in late 2014.
Marcelo's solo album, Sinfonia Primitiva Nº 1, was recognized in 2018. It was ranked as the 43rd best Brazilian album of that year by the Brazilian Rolling Stone magazine.
His Family Life
Marcelo Camelo is married to the singer and composer Mallu Magalhães. They are also bandmates in Banda do Mar. In 2015, they welcomed their first child, a daughter named Luísa. The family now lives in Portugal.
