Marco Zoppo (born in 1433 – died on February 19, 1498) was an Italian painter. He lived during the exciting time of the Renaissance. Marco Zoppo mostly worked in a city called Bologna.

He was born in a town called Cento. He learned painting from teachers like Lippo Dalmasio and Francesco Squarcione. This was around the year 1455. He was also friends with another famous painter, Andrea Mantegna. Marco Zoppo painted many pictures of the Virgin Mary and Baby Jesus. He died in Venice.

Marco Zoppo's Art Journey

The first time we hear about Marco Zoppo is in 1452. He was a young painter living in his hometown of Cento. He was hired to add gold (this is called gilding) to a statue of the Virgin Mary and Baby Jesus.

Learning in Padua

The next year, in 1453, Zoppo was in Padua. He joined the workshop of Francesco Squarcione. Squarcione was a 'tailor and embroiderer' but also a teacher of art. Soon, Squarcione even adopted Marco Zoppo.

During his time in Padua, Zoppo learned a lot. He was greatly influenced by the sculptor Donatello. Donatello had just finished a huge bronze artwork for a church. Zoppo also learned from painters Nicolò Pizolo and Andrea Mantegna. These artists were known for showing strong feelings and using clever ways to show depth in their paintings.

Some of Zoppo's works from this time show these influences. For example, the Wimborne Madonna is now in the Louvre Museum in Paris. Another is the Colville folio in the British Museum.

Moving to Venice and Bologna

By September 1455, Marco Zoppo had left Padua. He moved to Venice. There, he had a disagreement with his adoptive father, Squarcione. They ended their personal and legal ties.

It is believed that Zoppo soon went back to Bologna. This might have been as early as 1456. In Bologna, he created many important artworks. One of these is a painted Crucifix. You can see it today in the Museo dei Cappuccini. He also helped create a large altarpiece for the Church of San Clemente.

A Painting Mystery

One of Marco Zoppo's paintings is quite famous and debated. It is called Head of the Baptist and is in Pesaro. Some art experts believe Zoppo painted it. Others think it was painted by another famous artist, Giovanni Bellini. Many art historians have shared their ideas about who the real painter was.
