Marcus Terrell Thornton (born June 5, 1987) is an American professional basketball player. He played college basketball for the LSU Tigers. He was picked by the Miami Heat in the 2009 NBA draft. Marcus has played for several teams in the NBA, including the New Orleans Hornets, Sacramento Kings, and Washington Wizards.

College Basketball Journey
Marcus Thornton started his college basketball career at Kilgore College in Texas. He played there for two years. In his first year (2005–06), he scored about 14.5 points per game. In his second year (2006–07), he was amazing, averaging 26.9 points per game! This earned him a special award as a top junior college player.
After Kilgore, Marcus moved to Louisiana State University. As a junior in 2007–08, he was one of the top scorers in his conference, averaging 19.6 points per game. In his senior year (2008–09), he averaged 21.1 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 2.1 assists. He was even named the best player in the Southeastern Conference (SEC) in 2009! He finished his time at LSU with a lot of points and many three-pointers.
Marcus Thornton's Pro Career
Playing for the New Orleans Hornets (2009–2011)
Marcus Thornton was chosen by the Miami Heat in the 2009 NBA draft. However, his rights were soon traded to the New Orleans Hornets. On February 23, 2010, Marcus had an incredible game against the Cleveland Cavaliers. He scored 37 points, which was a record for a Hornets rookie! He also set a record for points scored in one quarter (23) and points scored coming off the bench.
Because of his great first year, Marcus was named to the NBA All-Rookie Second Team in 2010. He averaged 14.5 points per game and made 117 three-pointers, another rookie record for the Hornets.
Time with the Sacramento Kings (2011–2014)
On February 23, 2011, Marcus was traded to the Sacramento Kings. He quickly made a big impact. On March 14, 2011, he scored a career-high 42 points in a game against the Golden State Warriors.
During the 2011–12 season, which was shorter due to a lockout, Marcus led the Kings in scoring. He averaged 18.7 points per game and started all 51 games he played. He continued to have strong performances, even tying his career-high of 42 points again on January 24, 2014, in a game against the Indiana Pacers.
Short Stays with Other NBA Teams (2014–2017)
Marcus Thornton moved to several other NBA teams after his time with the Kings.
Brooklyn Nets (2014)
In February 2014, Marcus was traded to the Brooklyn Nets. He had a great game for the Nets on March 9, scoring 27 points in a win against his former team, the Sacramento Kings.
Boston Celtics (2014–2015)
In July 2014, Marcus was traded to the Boston Celtics. He scored a season-high 21 points for the Celtics on December 7, helping them win against the Washington Wizards.
Phoenix Suns (2015)
In February 2015, Marcus was traded to the Phoenix Suns. He played in only nine games for the Suns, partly due to an injury.
Houston Rockets (2015–2016)
Marcus signed with the Houston Rockets in July 2015. On December 8, he scored a season-high 32 points in a game against the Brooklyn Nets. He was briefly traded to the Detroit Pistons in February 2016, but the trade was canceled. He was then released by the Rockets.
Washington Wizards (2016–2017)
In March 2016, Marcus signed with the Washington Wizards. He played his first game with them on March 11. He re-signed with the Wizards in July 2016. In February 2017, he was traded back to the Brooklyn Nets but was released the very next day.
Playing in the G-League and China (2017–2022)
After his NBA career, Marcus Thornton played in the NBA G League, which is like a development league for the NBA.
Grand Rapids Drive (2017–2019)
In December 2017, Marcus joined the Grand Rapids Drive in the G-League. He also played for the Beijing Ducks in China for a short time in 2018. He returned to the Grand Rapids Drive in December 2018. On March 3, 2019, he had another fantastic game, scoring 42 points!
Motor City Cruise (2022)
In January 2022, Marcus was picked up by the Motor City Cruise, another G-League team. He played in only four games before being released later that month.

Marcus Thornton has a daughter named Maleia, who was born on January 1, 2016. He is also related to another former NBA player, Al Thornton.
