Maresúa is a small but important community, known as a barrio, located in the municipality of San Germán, Puerto Rico. In 2010, about 1,794 people called Maresúa home. A barrio is like a neighborhood or a district within a larger town or city in Puerto Rico.

A Look at Maresúa's Past

Maresúa has an interesting history, tied to the bigger story of Puerto Rico. After the Spanish–American War ended in 1898, Spain gave Puerto Rico to the United States. This happened under the rules of the Treaty of Paris of 1898. Because of this, Puerto Rico became an unincorporated territory of the United States. This means it's part of the U.S. but doesn't have all the same rights as a state.

Counting the People: Census Data

In 1899, the United States Department of War conducted a special count of all the people in Puerto Rico. This count is called a census. The census helps us understand how many people live in different areas. For Maresúa, the census in 1899 showed that Maresúa and a nearby barrio called Tuna had a combined population of 1,044 people.
