Margaret Colin (born May 26, 1958) is an American actress. She is famous for her roles in movies and TV shows. You might know her as Constance Spano in the sci-fi film Independence Day (1996). She also played Margo Hughes on the soap opera As the World Turns and Eleanor Waldorf in the popular teen drama Gossip Girl.

Early Life and Education
Margaret Colin was born in Brooklyn, New York City. She grew up in Baldwin, New York, which is on Long Island. Her family has Irish roots and she was raised in a large Catholic family. She finished high school at Baldwin Senior High School in 1976. After that, she went to Hofstra University.
Acting Career Highlights
Margaret Colin started her acting journey in soap operas. Her first big role was on The Edge of Night. She then joined As the World Turns as Margo Montgomery. This character was very popular and stayed on the show for almost 30 years!
TV Show Appearances
Colin has been in many prime-time TV shows. She appeared in early episodes of Chicago Hope. She also played Lisa Wiseman in the 1999 series Now and Again. In 2003, she was in an episode of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.
From 2007 to 2012, Margaret Colin had a recurring role on Gossip Girl. She played Eleanor Waldorf, who is the mother of Blair Waldorf. Another actress played Eleanor in the very first episode, but Margaret Colin took over the role for most of the series. She even returned for two episodes of the new Gossip Girl series in 2021 and 2023.
In 2017, Colin joined the cast of the HBO comedy series Veep. She played Jane McCabe, a news anchor. For her work on Veep, she and her castmates won a special award called the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series.

Margaret Colin has also starred in many movies. Some of her well-known films include Something Wild (1986) and Three Men and a Baby (1987). She was also in The Butcher's Wife (1991) and The Devil's Own (1997). A big role for her was Constance Spano in the hit movie Independence Day (1996). Later, she appeared in Unfaithful (2002) and First Daughter (2004).

Besides TV and movies, Colin has performed on Broadway. She played Jacqueline Kennedy in the play Jackie: An American Life. In 2003, she was in the play A Day in the Death of Joe Egg. She also performed as Mrs. Mullin in the 2018 Broadway revival of Carousel.
Personal Life
Margaret Colin met actor Justin Deas while they were working on As the World Turns. They got married in January 1988. They have two sons named Sam and Joe. Margaret is also a stepmother to Justin's daughter from his first marriage. In the late 1990s, their family moved to Upper Montclair, New Jersey.
