The Margaret Fuller House is a special place in Cambridge, Massachusetts. It was the childhood home of Margaret Fuller (1810–1850). She was a very important American writer and thinker. The house is located at 71 Cherry Street, in a historic area called "The Port." Today, this house is known as a National Historic Landmark.

The house is three stories tall and made of wood. It was built in the early 1800s in the Federal style. Margaret Fuller lived here from when she was born until she was 16 years old. Later, in 1902, the house became a "settlement house." This means it helped new immigrants learn about American culture. Now, it's called the Margaret Fuller Neighborhood House.

The Early Years of the House

Margaret Fuller's parents, Timothy Fuller and Margaret Crane Fuller, got married in 1809. A few months later, they bought this house on Cherry Street. They paid $6,000 for it, which was a lot of money back then! Their daughter, Sarah Margaret Fuller, was born in this home on May 23, 1810.

What the House Does Today

Today, the Margaret Fuller House helps people in "The Port" community in Cambridge. It offers many useful services.

  • It has a free computer lab where people can use computers.
  • It teaches computer classes.
  • There is a food pantry that helps families get food.
  • It provides after-school programs for children.
  • People can use its meeting rooms for different activities.
  • During the summer, it runs a daytime summer camp for kids.

Every year, there's a special event called the "Sweet Soul Supper." This event raises money to help keep these important services going.

The house became a National Historic Landmark in 1974. This was because of Margaret Fuller and her important ideas. She wrote a book called Woman in the Nineteenth Century in the 1840s. One of her biographers, Karen Antony, said this book was "the first considered statement of feminism in this country." This means it was one of the first big discussions about equal rights for women in America.
