Lady Margaret Pennyman (born Margaret Angier, around 1685 – June 16, 1733) was an English poet. She kept a special journal. In this journal, she wrote down her poems. She also wrote about her very difficult marriage. Plus, she shared how she lost a lot of money in a big French investment plan.

Margaret Pennyman's Life Story

Margaret Angier was baptized in May 1685. This happened at a church called St Margaret's, Westminster. Her mother's name was Jane. Her father was a carpenter. He worked in the City of Westminster. He even did some work for King Charles II at one time.

In 1703, Margaret ran away to get married. She married Thomas Pennyman from Yorkshire. He had inherited money when his older brother passed away. People said Thomas was the son of "Sir James Pennyman." Margaret had £2,000 of her own money. But this money did not help their marriage. She married him in a public house and also in a church. You can find a list of Pennyman baronets.

By 1720, Margaret was in Paris, France. She was trying to get some money back. She had invested in a big plan called the Mississippi scheme. Most of her money was gone because of this plan. She wrote about her trip to Paris in her journal. She also included some poems there. This journal was published after she died. In her notes, she described Catholic church ceremonies. She also mentioned seeing Louis XV, the King of France, at church.

Her Books and Legacy

Margaret Pennyman's book was called "Miscellanies in Prose and Verse, by the Honourable Lady Margaret Pennyman." It was published in 1739. The publisher was Edmund Curll. He wrote that she had died without any money. However, Edmund Curll was not always a trustworthy source. Margaret died on June 16, 1733. Her brother buried her in the same church where she had been baptized.
