Early Life and Family
Margaret Woodrow Wilson was born in Gainesville, Georgia, on April 16, 1886. Even though her father was teaching in the North when she was born, both of her parents felt strongly connected to the South.
Her mother, Ellen Wilson, wanted her children to be born in the South. So, she arranged to stay with family in Gainesville for the births of her first two daughters. Margaret went to local schools. Some of these schools were connected to the colleges where her father taught.
Her Love for Music
Margaret Wilson was a talented singer. She even made several recordings of her music. In 1914, she released a song called "My Laddie." This song was put out by Columbia Records.
Her father, Woodrow Wilson, left her money in his will. She would receive $2,500 each year. This payment was called an annuity, which means a fixed sum of money paid to someone each year. She would receive this money as long as she remained unmarried.
Life in India
In 1938, Margaret Wilson traveled far away to India. She went to a special spiritual center called the ashram of Sri Aurobindo in Pondicherry. She stayed there for the rest of her life.
Margaret became a dedicated member of the ashram. She was given a new name, 'Nistha'. This name means "dedication" in Sanskrit, an ancient Indian language. She also helped with an important project. She and a scholar named Joseph Campbell edited the English translation of a famous book. This book was about a Hindu mystic named Sri Ramakrishna. The book was called The Gospel of Sri Ramakrishna. It was published in 1942.
Margaret Wilson passed away on February 12, 1944. She was 57 years old. She died from a kidney condition called uremia. She was buried in Pondicherry, India. She never married and did not have children.
