She became a professor at the Complutense University of Madrid. There, she taught and studied biology, especially focusing on botany, which is the study of plants.

Her Life and Studies

Margarita Costa Tenorio grew up in Vigo, a city in Spain. Later, her family moved to Madrid. There, she went to the Complutense University of Madrid to study biology. In 1974, she joined the Plant Biology Department at the university. She finished her PhD in 1978. After that, she continued working as a professor. She taught many students until she retired in 2011.

Discovering Iberian Forests

Early in her career, Margarita created a special group. This group included young botanists, professors, and students. They studied the forests of the Iberian Peninsula. This means they looked at how plants and trees grew in different areas. Their hard work led to a very important book. It was called "Los bosques ibéricos" (which means "The Iberian Forests"). This book was published in 1997. It took them nearly 20 years to create it! The book became a key guide. It helped many people learn about the plants and trees in that region. Margarita also helped write other books, like "Evolución y filogenia".

Working for Nature and Education

From 1985, Margarita worked with the Royal Society for Spanish Natural History. She first helped as a librarian. Later, she organized and spoke at conferences. She shared her knowledge with many people.

Margarita was also a professor and held leadership roles. She strongly believed in good public education for everyone. She worked hard to make sure all students had equal chances to learn.

In 1998, she started working with "Natura 2000". This is a big network of nature protection areas. These areas are found across the European Union. Her work helped protect important natural places.
