Margarita Mamun (born November 1, 1995) is a famous retired Russian rhythmic gymnast. She is best known for winning the gold medal at the 2016 Olympic Games.

Mamun has won many other awards. She was a two-time silver medalist at the World Championships in 2014 and 2015. She also won silver medals at the 2015 European Games and the 2016 European Championships. For three years in a row, she was the champion at the Grand Prix Final.

She holds the world record for the highest all-around score under the old 20-point judging system. She scored an amazing 77.150 points at a competition in 2016.

Personal Life

Margarita Mamun was born in Moscow, Russia. Her father, Abdullah Al Mamun, was from Bangladesh and was a marine engineer. Her mother, Anna, was a Russian former rhythmic gymnast. Because of her parents, Mamun holds citizenship for both Russia and Bangladesh. She has a younger brother named Filipp.

Her father passed away from cancer in 2016. This happened just a few days after she returned home from winning her Olympic gold medal in Brazil.

Mamun is married to Olympic swimmer Alexandr Sukhorukov. They got married in 2017. In 2019, they had a son named Lev. She lives in Moscow with her family and their dog, a Pomeranian named Barney. Besides her native Russian, she speaks English very well.

Gymnastics Career

Early Years

Mamun started gymnastics at a young age. As a junior, she competed in many international events. She was coached by Amina Zaripova, who was also a world champion in rhythmic gymnastics. For a short time when she was 12, she competed for Bangladesh, but she returned to represent Russia as a senior gymnast.

Senior Career

First Big Wins (2011-2012)

In 2011, Mamun started competing as a senior. She quickly made a name for herself at the World Cup in Montreal, Canada. There, she won a bronze medal for her overall performance and a gold medal for her ball routine.

In 2012, she continued to win medals at World Cup events. She won a gold medal in the all-around competition in Sofia, Bulgaria. This showed she was one of the top gymnasts in the world.

Becoming a Champion (2013)

The year 2013 was a huge success for Mamun. She won the all-around gold medal at the Moscow Grand Prix. She also won gold medals with the hoop, ball, and clubs.

At the European Championships, she helped the Russian team win a gold medal. She also won a gold medal for her ribbon routine and three silver medals for other routines. Later that year, she won the all-around gold medal at the 2013 Summer Universiade.

At the 2013 World Championships, she won gold medals for her ball and clubs routines. She ended the year by winning the all-around title at the Grand Prix Final in Berlin.

In 2014, Mamun continued to perform at a high level. She won many gold medals at Grand Prix and World Cup events.

At the 2014 World Championships, she helped Russia win the team gold medal. Individually, she won two gold medals for her ribbon and ball routines. She also won two silver medals for her hoop and clubs routines. In the all-around final, she won the silver medal, right behind her teammate Yana Kudryavtseva.

Road to the Olympics (2015)

In 2015, Mamun kept her focus on competing and winning. She won gold medals at the Moscow Grand Prix and the Berlin Grand Prix.

At the 2015 European Games, she won the silver medal in the all-around competition and a gold medal for her hoop routine.

The 2015 World Championships were held in Stuttgart, Germany. Mamun helped Russia win the team gold medal again. She won a gold medal for her hoop routine and two silver medals. In the all-around final, a small mistake with her ribbon cost her the gold medal, and she finished with the silver. At this event, she was given the Longines Prize for Elegance for her beautiful performances.

The year 2016 was the most important of Mamun's career. She won gold medals at many World Cup events leading up to the Olympics. She even set a new world record for the highest all-around score at the World Cup in Baku.

At the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Mamun was ready to compete for the biggest prize. In the all-around final, she was in a close competition with her teammate Yana Kudryavtseva. After Kudryavtseva made a mistake in her clubs routine, Mamun performed flawlessly.

Her amazing routines with the clubs and ribbon secured her the Olympic gold medal. She was the only gymnast in the final to score over 19 points (out of 20) for all four of her routines.

Retirement

In November 2017, it was officially announced that Margarita Mamun had retired from competitive rhythmic gymnastics. She ended her career as an Olympic champion.

Life After Gymnastics

After retiring, Mamun was the main subject of a 2017 documentary film called Over the Limit. The film showed her intense training and preparation for the 2016 Olympics. It gave fans a look at the hard work and pressure that elite athletes face.

In a 2024 interview, Mamun talked about the difficult parts of her career. She spoke about the intense pressure she faced from coaches. She also shared that her childhood dream was to learn to play the piano. Her husband later gifted her a piano for her birthday.
