Maria Alba (born María del Pilar Margarita Casajuana Martínez on December 28, 1905 – died October 26, 1999) was a talented actress from Spain who also became an American citizen. She was known for her roles in many movies.
Becoming an Actress
Maria Alba was born in Barcelona, Spain. She won a special contest held by the Fox Film Corporation, a big movie studio. After winning, she traveled to the United States in 1927. She sailed on a ship called the S/S Suffern from France and arrived in New York City.
When she first started acting, she was known as Maria Casajuana. She appeared in 25 movies! Her first film was Road House in 1928, and her last was La morena de mi copla in 1946.
Famous Roles
Maria Alba had some very memorable roles. As Maria Alba, she played "Saturday" in the 1932 film Mr. Robinson Crusoe, which starred Douglas Fairbanks. She also played the exciting "Princess Nadji" in the movie series The Return of Chandu, alongside Bela Lugosi.
Other actresses from Latin countries, like Lupe Vélez and Dolores del Río, learned to speak English very well. Maria Alba spoke English with a strong accent. This sometimes made it harder for her to get certain acting jobs.
