Maria Francesca Rossetti (born February 17, 1827 – died November 24, 1876) was an English writer and a nun. She was part of a very talented family! Her brothers were famous artists and writers: Dante Gabriel Rossetti and William Michael Rossetti. Her sister, Christina Georgina Rossetti, was also a well-known poet. Christina even dedicated her famous poem, Goblin Market, to Maria in 1862.

Maria Rossetti's Life and Work
Maria Rossetti was a smart and dedicated person. She spent her life writing and helping others.
Writing and Teaching Career
Maria wrote a book called The Shadow of Dante: Being an essay towards studying himself, his world, and his pilgrimage. It was published in 1871. This book helped people learn about the famous Italian poet Dante.
When her father became ill, the family faced tough times. Maria worked as a governess, which means she taught children in their home. One of her students was Lucy Madox Brown, who later became her sister-in-law.
Joining a Religious Order
When Maria was 46 years old, she joined a group of religious women called the Society of All Saints Sisters of the Poor. This was an Anglican order, which is a type of Christian community. Lucy Madox Brown even wanted to paint Maria in her nun's clothing.
Maria translated a special prayer book for her order. It was called The Day Hours and Other Offices as Used by the Sisters of All Saints. This book was used by the sisters until 1922. Maria and her sister Christina also volunteered their time. They helped at a special home in Highgate for women who needed support.
Personal Life and Interests
Maria never got married. Her brothers and sister sometimes playfully teased her about her round face. They called her 'Moony'.
Maria was friends with a famous writer and artist named John Ruskin. She visited his home in England.
Maria Rossetti's Death
Maria passed away in 1876 from ovarian cancer. She was buried in the convent's special burial area at Brompton Cemetery.

Maria Francesca Rossetti wrote several books during her lifetime. Many of her works focused on Italian language and literature, especially the works of Dante.
