Journey to the Arctic
In 1735, Maria and her husband Vasili began their journey. They traveled down the Lena River from Yakutsk. They used Vasili's ship, the Yakutsk. After passing the river's delta, they stopped for the winter. Their winter camp was at the mouth of the Olenek River.
Life during the winter was very hard. Many crew members became sick. They suffered from a disease called scurvy. Scurvy is caused by not having enough vitamin C. Sadly, many people died during this time.
Exploring the Taymyr Peninsula
Despite the difficulties, they continued their mission. In 1736, they reached the eastern shore of the Taymyr Peninsula. This area is very far north. They sailed along its coastline, exploring new lands.
