Early Life and Training

In 1718, Vasili Pronchishchev finished his studies. He graduated from the Moscow School of Mathematics and Navigation. After that, he became a naval cadet. This was a step towards becoming an officer in the navy. In 1733, he was promoted to the rank of lieutenant. This meant he was ready for bigger tasks.

The Great Northern Expedition

Lieutenant Pronchishchev was chosen for a very important mission. He became the leader of one part of the Great Northern Expedition. This huge expedition had a big goal. Its purpose was to map the shores of the Arctic Ocean. His team was tasked with exploring the coast from the mouth of the Lena River to the mouth of the Yenisey River.

Sailing the Arctic Seas

In 1735, Vasili Pronchishchev began his journey. He sailed down the Lena River from Yakutsk. He was on his ship, a sloop named Yakutsk. He sailed around the river's delta, which is where it splits into many channels before meeting the sea. Then, he stopped for the winter. They stayed near the mouth of the Olenek River.

Challenges and Discoveries

The winter was very tough. Many crew members became sick and died. Most of them suffered from a disease called scurvy. This illness is caused by a lack of vitamin C. Despite these great difficulties, Pronchishchev continued his mission. In 1736, he reached the eastern shore of the Taymyr Peninsula. He then sailed north along its coastline.

Sadly, Vasili Pronchishchev and his wife, Maria, died on the way back. They both passed away from scurvy. Maria Pronchishcheva was with him on this journey. She is known as the first female polar explorer. Even with these losses, the expedition was a success. It achieved its main goals.

During his journey, Vasili Pronchishchev found several islands. These islands are off the northeastern coast of the Taymyr Peninsula. They include the Faddey Islands, Komsomolskoy Pravdy Islands, and Saint Peter Islands. His expedition was also the first to make accurate maps. They mapped the Lena River from Yakutsk to its mouth. They also mapped the Laptev Sea coast from the Lena's mouth to the Gulf of Faddey. Vasili and Maria Pronchishcheva were buried at the mouth of the Olenek River.

A Lasting Legacy

Today, parts of the Arctic are named after Vasili Pronchishchev. A section of the eastern coastline of the Taymyr Peninsula bears his name. Also, a ridge between the mouths of the Olenek and Anabar Rivers is named after him. An icebreaker ship, built in 1961, was also named Vasili Pronchishchev. This was to honor him as a pioneering Arctic explorer.

His wife, Maria, is also remembered. Maria Pronchishcheva Bay in the Laptev Sea is named after her.
