Marian Louisa, Lady Elmhirst (born Montagu Douglas Scott) was a notable British lady. She was born on June 16, 1908. She was the first daughter of Lord Herbert Montagu Douglas Scott and Marie Edwards.

Lady Elmhirst was the grandmother of Sarah, Duchess of York. This also made her the great-grandmother of Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie. She was also a cousin of Lady Alice Montagu Douglas Scott, who became the Duchess of Gloucester.

Early Life and Family Connections

Marian Louisa Montagu Douglas Scott was born in London, England. Her father was Lord Herbert Montagu Douglas Scott. He was the son of the 6th Duke of Buccleuch. Her mother was Marie Josephine Edwards.

Marian had many interesting family connections. Her cousin, Lady Alice, married Prince Henry. This made Lady Alice the Duchess of Gloucester. Marian was also an aunt-by-marriage to Queen Elizabeth II. Another interesting connection was to Cynthia, the grandmother of Lady Diana, Princess of Wales. Cynthia was Marian's second cousin.

Marriages and Children

Marian Louisa married twice in her life. Her first marriage was to Colonel Andrew Ferguson.

First Marriage to Andrew Ferguson

On November 1, 1927, Marian married Colonel Andrew Ferguson in London. She was 19 years old. Andrew Ferguson was born on October 10, 1899. They had two sons together:

  • John Ferguson (born January 21, 1929)
  • Ronald Ferguson (born October 10, 1931)

Sadly, their first son, John, died at the age of ten in 1939. He passed away from a serious illness. Years later, Marian's granddaughter, Sarah, Duchess of York, shared a detail about John's death. She said he died from a severe allergic reaction after eating a crab sandwich.

Their second son, Ronald, became a well-known polo player. He was the father of Sarah, Duchess of York. This means he was the grandfather of Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie. Ronald Ferguson passed away on March 16, 2003, after a long illness.

Second Marriage to Sir Thomas Elmhirst

Colonel Andrew Ferguson died on August 4, 1966. A little over two years later, Marian married again. On October 30, 1968, she married Sir Thomas Elmhirst. He was a widower. After this marriage, Marian became known as Lady Elmhirst. Sir Thomas Elmhirst passed away on November 6, 1982.

Later Life and Passing

Lady Elmhirst lived a long life. She passed away on December 11, 1996. She was 88 years old. Her death took place in Dummer, Hampshire, England.

By the time she died, both of her husbands had passed away before her. Her first son, John, also died before her. Lady Elmhirst was survived by her son, Major Ronald Ferguson. She also had five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren at the time of her death.
