Lieutenant Colonel Lord Herbert Andrew Montagu Douglas Scott (born November 30, 1872 – died June 17, 1944) was a British Army officer. He was the fifth child of the 6th Duke of Buccleuch and Lady Louisa Hamilton.

Lord Herbert had interesting family connections. He was a great-grandfather to Sarah, Duchess of York. This means he was also a great-great-grandfather to Princess Beatrice of York and Princess Eugenie of York. He was also an uncle to Princess Alice, Duchess of Gloucester.

Early Life and Family

Lord Herbert Andrew Montagu Douglas Scott was born in London on November 30, 1872. His family lived at Montagu House in Whitehall. He was one of eight children, with six brothers and two sisters.

On April 26, 1905, he married Marie Josephine Agnes Edwards in London. They had three children together:

  • Andrew Montagu Douglas Scott (born 1906 – died 1971)
  • Marian Montagu Douglas Scott (born 1908 – died 1996)
  • Patricia Katherine Montagu Douglas Scott (born 1910 – died 2012)

Military Service

Lord Herbert began his military career in a part-time regiment called the 3rd (Edinburgh Light Infantry Militia) Battalion, Royal Scots. This regiment had a long history with his family. He became a captain in 1894.

The Second Boer War

In December 1899, Lord Herbert went to South Africa. He served as a staff officer during the early part of the Second Boer War. He worked for Lord Roberts, who was the Commander-in-Chief of the British forces there.

While in South Africa, he joined the regular army. He became a second lieutenant in the Irish Guards in 1900. He was promoted to lieutenant later that year and then to captain in 1902. He served in the Guards Mounted Infantry.

For his brave service in the war, he received several honors. He was mentioned in official reports for his good work. He also received the Distinguished Service Order, a special award for military bravery. He earned two medals for his service in South Africa. After the war ended in June 1902, he returned to England.

First World War

In 1910, Lord Herbert was promoted to lieutenant colonel. He commanded the 1/23rd London Regiment. He led his troops in France during the First World War.

Later Life and Death

After his military career, Lord Herbert took on a new role. He became the Chairman of Rolls-Royce, a famous car and engine company.

Lieutenant Colonel Lord Herbert Andrew Montagu Douglas Scott passed away on June 17, 1944. He was 71 years old. He died at his home in Martyr Worthy, near Winchester, England. He was survived by his wife, Marie Josephine, his three children, and seven grandchildren.
