Louisa Jane Montagu Douglas Scott, Duchess of Buccleuch and Queensberry VA (born August 26, 1836 – died March 16, 1912) was an important lady in British society. She was the daughter of James Hamilton, 1st Duke of Abercorn. In 1884, she became the Duchess of Buccleuch and Queensberry. This happened when she married William Henry Walter Montagu Douglas Scott, 6th Duke of Buccleuch. She also held a special job working for the Queen.

Early Life and Family
Louisa Jane Hamilton was born in Brighton, England. This was on August 26, 1836. She was the third of fourteen children. Her parents were James Hamilton, 1st Duke of Abercorn, and Lady Louisa Russell. Her mother was the daughter of the John Russell, 6th Duke of Bedford.
Louisa married William Montagu Douglas Scott. He was then known as the Earl of Dalkeith. Their wedding took place in London on November 22, 1859. William was the oldest son of the Walter Montagu Douglas Scott, 5th Duke of Buccleuch. His mother was Lady Charlotte Thynne.
Louisa and William had eight children together. They had six sons and two daughters:

Working for the Queen
Louisa had a very important role at the royal court. She served as the Mistress of the Robes. This job meant she was the chief lady-in-waiting to the Queen. She was in charge of the Queen's clothes and jewels. She also helped organize the Queen's public appearances.
She worked for Queen Victoria for many years. She held this position from 1885 to 1892. She then served Queen Victoria again from 1895 until 1901.
After Queen Victoria passed away, Louisa continued her service. She was appointed Mistress of the Robes to Queen Alexandra in 1901. She held this role until her own death in 1912.
Later Life and Death
The Duchess of Buccleuch passed away on March 16, 1912. She was 75 years old. She died at Dalkeith Palace in Scotland. Her husband and six of her children were still alive at that time.
She was buried a few days later. Her burial took place on March 20, 1912. She was laid to rest in the family crypt. This crypt is located in St. Mary's Church, also at Dalkeith Palace.
