Lord Henry Francis Montagu-Douglas Scott (born January 1868 – died April 1945) was a Scottish cricketer and a brave officer in the British Army. He was known for his dedication to his country and his love for sports.

Early Life and Cricket

Henry was born in January 1868 in a place called Bowhill, Selkirkshire, Scotland. He was the fourth son of William Montagu Douglas Scott, who was the 6th Duke of Buccleuch. His mother was Louisa Montagu Douglas Scott.

Education

Henry went to a famous school called Eton College. After that, he studied at Christ Church, Oxford, which is part of Oxford University. He received a good education that prepared him for his future roles.

Playing Cricket

While he was at Oxford, Henry played first-class cricket. This is a high level of cricket played between top teams. He played one match for a team called H. Philipson's XI against Oxford University in 1891.

His Performance

In that match, Henry batted twice. In the first part of the game, he scored 23 runs and was not out, meaning he stayed batting until the end of his team's turn. In the second part, he scored 2 runs before being out.

Military Career

Henry served with his battalion in the Second Boer War. This was a big conflict in South Africa. During this war, he was promoted to the rank of major, which is a very important position.

Leading the Battalion

In June 1905, he was given the honorary rank of lieutenant colonel. Later that year, in November, he became the commanding officer of his battalion. This meant he was in charge of many soldiers. He retired from this command in 1912.

Henry's military service continued when the First World War began. He was mentioned in official reports five times for his bravery and good work. This is a special honor for soldiers.

Commanding Troops

In September 1914, he was put in charge of the 1st Public Schools Battalion, Royal Fusiliers. This was a new battalion formed at the start of the war. After this battalion was no longer needed, he moved to another battalion. Towards the end of the war, he joined the Labour Corps, which helped with important tasks behind the front lines.

Retirement from Army

After the war ended, Henry officially left the army. He was given the full rank of colonel, recognizing his long and distinguished service to his country.

Founding the Royal Scots Club

In 1921, Henry founded the Royal Scots Club Edinburgh. He created this club as a way to remember the soldiers of the Royal Scots regiment who had died in the war. He made sure that all soldiers, no matter their rank, could become members of the club.

Other Important Roles

Henry also held several other important positions. In June 1915, he was appointed as a brigadier in the Royal Company of Archers, which is a ceremonial guard for the King or Queen in Scotland. In his later years, he served as the deputy-governor of the Bank of Scotland. He also worked as a Justice of the peace for several areas in Scotland, helping to keep law and order.

Henry passed away in April 1945 in Melrose, Scotland. He never married.
