Early Life and Education
William Henry Walter Montagu Douglas Scott was born in London, England, at a place called Montagu House, Whitehall. He was born on September 9, 1831.
He was the oldest son in a big family with four boys and three girls. His parents were Walter Montagu Douglas Scott, who was the 5th Duke of Buccleuch, and Lady Charlotte Anne Thynne.
William went to two very famous schools. First, he studied at Eton College, which is a well-known boarding school. After that, he went to Christ Church, Oxford, which is part of the famous Oxford University.
What Did He Do?
William Montagu Douglas Scott was a member of the Conservative Party. He was elected to be a Member of Parliament for an area called Midlothian in Scotland.
He served as an MP two times. The first time was from 1853 to 1868. Then, he was elected again and served from 1874 to 1880. As an MP, he helped represent the people of Midlothian in the government.
He also had other important jobs. He was a lieutenant colonel in a military group called the Midlothian Yeomanry. He also worked as a Justice of the Peace, which means he helped keep order and deal with minor legal matters in his local area.
During the 1880 election, a strange political pamphlet was published. It was called Political Achievements of the Earl of Dalkeith. The cover looked very official, but inside, all 32 pages were completely blank! This was a clever way to suggest that William, who was known as the Earl of Dalkeith at the time, hadn't achieved much. He ended up losing the election to William Ewart Gladstone, who later became a Prime Minister.
His Family Life
On November 22, 1859, William married Lady Louisa Jane Hamilton in London. Lady Louisa was the daughter of Sir James Hamilton, who was the 1st Duke of Abercorn.
When they got married, William was known as the "Earl of Dalkeith." So, his new wife became the "Countess of Dalkeith." They had a large family with eight children: six sons and two daughters.
- Walter Henry Montagu Douglas Scott, Earl of Dalkeith (1861–1886)
