Mariano Arana (born March 6, 1933 – died June 4, 2023) was an important person from Uruguay. He was an architect, which means he designed buildings. He was also a politician, serving as a government minister and the mayor of Montevideo, the capital city of Uruguay.

About Mariano Arana
Mariano Arana's family came from Spain. He went to a French school in Montevideo and later studied architecture at the University of the Republic. He became a teacher there and even led the Institute of History of Architecture.
He also started a publishing company called Banda Oriental Editions. From 1985 to 1989, he was in charge of the Comisión de Patrimonio Histórico, Artístico y Cultural de la Nación. This group helps protect Uruguay's historical, artistic, and cultural treasures.
Mariano Arana wrote many books. Some were about architecture, and others were about politics. One of his last books, written with Professor Oscar Destouet, was called 5 Vertientes de la Izquierda. It shared ideas from five important thinkers of the Uruguayan left-wing political movement.
Mariano Arana's Political Career
Mariano Arana helped start and lead a political group called the Vertiente Artiguista. In 1989, he was chosen as a senator, which is a member of the country's parliament. He held this job until 1994.
He was also a leader in the Frente Amplio political party in Montevideo. He ran for mayor of Montevideo twice. In 1994, he won the election and became mayor with 42% of the votes. He was so popular that he was re-elected in 2000, winning with 58% of the votes.

As mayor, Mariano Arana started a big project called the Strategic Plan Montevideo. This plan helped to fix up old buildings and organize the city's areas better. It made Montevideo look nicer and work more smoothly.
Minister of Housing
In 2005, when Tabaré Vázquez became president, Mariano Arana was chosen for a new important job. He became the Minister of Housing, Territorial Planning and Environment. This meant he was in charge of things like housing, city planning, and protecting the environment for the whole country. He served in this role until March 2008.
After being a minister, Mariano Arana continued to serve the city of Montevideo. He worked as a Councillor for the Montevideo Departmental Junta until he passed away.
