Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Mariano Iberico Rodríguez (born in Cajamarca, Peru, in 1892 – died in Lima, Peru, in 1974) was an important Peruvian thinker and teacher. He spent his life exploring big questions about life and how we understand the world.

Life and Education

Mariano Iberico Rodríguez was born in Cajamarca, Peru, on April 11, 1892. He went to college at the National University of San Marcos in Lima. This is one of the oldest and most famous universities in Peru.

By 1919, he had earned three special degrees called doctorates. These were in Literature, Political Science and Administration, and Law. After finishing his studies, he became a professor at the same university. He taught many subjects, including the history of philosophy, how we think, and art.

Later in his career, from 1952 to 1955, he became the head of the university, known as the rector. For a short time in December 1955, he also served as the Minister of Education for Peru. This meant he was in charge of the country's schools and learning.

His Ideas and Influence

Dr. Iberico focused on two main areas in his thinking. One was about the connection between aesthetics (the study of beauty and art) and metaphysics (the study of what is real). He believed that experiencing beauty could help us understand deeper truths about the universe. He called this the "feeling of cosmic life." He was inspired by the ideas of another philosopher named Henri Bergson.

His most original idea was about "being" and "appearing." This might sound tricky, but think of it this way:

  • Being is how something truly is.
  • Appearing is how something seems to us, or how it shows itself.

Dr. Iberico thought that when something "appears" to our minds, it changes how we understand its "being." He said that "being" and "appearing" are connected in a special dance. How something appears can help us understand what it truly is, and what it truly is can be seen in how it appears.

Today, the library at The National University of Cajamarca is named after him. This shows how important his ideas and work were.

Mariano Iberico Rodríguez wrote many books where he shared his ideas. Some of his most important works include:
