Mariano Alberto Martínez (born February 18, 1918 – died April 13, 2016) was a famous Argentine musician. He was known professionally as Mariano Mores. He was a talented tango composer and pianist.

Who Was Mariano Mores?

Mariano Martínez was born in 1918 in San Telmo, a neighborhood in Buenos Aires, Argentina. From a young age, he showed great talent for playing classical music on the piano. When he was just 14, he performed professionally for the first time at Café Vicente. He also took music lessons at the D´Andrea conservatoire. Later, he joined a folk group called "La Cuyanita." After that, he became a conductor and pianist for Roberto Firpo's orchestra.

Starting His Own Music Group

Mariano Mores formed a music group called Trio Mores. He created it with two sisters, Margot and Myrna Mores. This was when he started writing his own music. He later married Myrna and decided to use her artistic last name, Mores, as his own.

In 1938, he wrote music for a film called Senderos de Santa Fe. During this time, he met other important people in show business. These included composer Valdo Sciammarella and writer Alberto Vaccarezza. They helped him become the main pianist for Francisco Canaro's orchestra in 1939. Mariano Mores stayed with this orchestra until 1948. Then, he decided to start his own orchestra. His new orchestra first performed at the Presidente Alvear Theater.

Mariano Mores: A Tango Legend

Mariano Mores became one of the most important tango performers. He was a great pianist, composer, and conductor. He wrote many famous tango songs with other artists.

  • With Enrique Santos Discépolo, he created classics like Uno (1943), Sin palabras (1946), and Cafetín de Buenos Aires (1948).
  • He worked with José María Contursi on songs such as En esta tarde gris (1941), Tu piel de jazmín (1941), Grisel (1942), and Cristal (1944).
  • He also co-wrote La calesita (1953) and El patio de la morocha (1951) with Cátulo Castillo.
  • Una lágrima tuya (1949) was written with Homero Manzi.
  • Cuartito Azul (1939) was a collaboration with Mario Battistella.

Mores in Films and TV

Mariano Mores appeared in several musical films. He worked with famous actors like Delia Garcés, Osvaldo Miranda, Virginia Luque, and Hugo del Carril.

  • In 1949, he starred in the films Corrientes, calle de ensueños and La Doctora quiere tangos with Mirtha Legrand.
  • For the 1953 film La voz de mi ciudad, he composed a very popular milonga (a type of tango song) called Taquito militar.

He also starred in television series. These included M ama a M (1957) and La familia Mores (1967).

His Influence on Tango Music

Mariano Mores was a very important figure in Argentine popular music. He created the modern tango sextet. This group included instruments like the organ, piano, bandoneon, electric guitar, keyboard, drums, and bass.

Since 1980, the dancer and choreographer Luis Pereyra has used Mariano Mores' music in his dance shows. In 1986, Luis Pereyra joined Mariano Mores for his "Todo Tango" tour.

Mariano Mores passed away on April 13, 2016, at the age of 98.
