María del Carmen Alva Prieto (born 24 February 1967) is a Peruvian lawyer and politician. She was the president of the Congress of the Republic of Peru from July 2021 to July 2022. She is also a member of the Congress, representing Lima. Alva is a member of the political party called Popular Action.

Early Life and Education

María del Carmen Alva was born in Lima, Peru, on February 24, 1967. Her father was Miguel Alva Orlandini. Her uncle, Javier Alva Orlandini, was a well-known politician. Her grandfather, José Felipe Alva y Alva, was a senator for Cajamarca.

She studied law at the University of Lima and became a lawyer. Later, she earned a master's degree in Public Management. She studied at the Government Institute of the University of San Martín de Porres.

Political Career

Before becoming a politician, Alva worked as a lawyer. She was a legal advisor at the Ministry of Labor and Promotion of Employment. She also worked for the Social Security Normalization Office.

In 2006, Alva started her political journey. She ran for Congress as part of the Frente de Centro party. However, she was not elected at that time.

In 2010, she was elected as a councilor for Santa María del Mar. This is a district in Lima. She also served as deputy mayor during that time.

Alva tried again to join Congress in 2020. She ran for the Popular Action party but was not elected.

In the 2021 general elections, Alva was finally elected to Congress. She received 25,219 votes. On July 26, 2021, she was chosen to be the president of the Congress. She held this important role for one year, until July 26, 2022.

As a congresswoman, she worked on various laws. She often disagreed with President Pedro Castillo. She tried to remove him from office through a process called impeachment.

Personal Life

María del Carmen Alva is married. She has three sons.
