Mirtha Esther Vásquez Chuquilín (born on March 31, 1975) is a Peruvian lawyer and politician. She served as the Prime Minister of Peru from October 6, 2021, to January 31, 2022. Before that, she was a member of the Peruvian Congress. She represented the region of Cajamarca from March 2020 to July 2021.
Early Life and Education
Mirtha Vásquez was born in the northern region of Cajamarca, Peru. She studied law at the National University of Cajamarca. Later, she earned a master's degree in social management from the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru.
Career Highlights
Vásquez has taught at the National University of Cajamarca. She also worked as a lawyer and executive secretary for Grufides. This group helps protect human rights and the environment in Cajamarca. She also supported the Association for Human Rights (APRODEH). She was a member of the National Coordinator of Human Rights. Additionally, she wrote articles for Noticias SER.
In the 2020 Peruvian parliamentary election, Vásquez was elected to the Peruvian Congress. She represented the Cajamarca area. After Manuel Merino resigned as President of Peru in November 2020, she was chosen as the First Vice President of Congress. When Francisco Sagasti became president, Vásquez temporarily led the Congress.
On October 6, 2021, Pedro Castillo, who was president at the time, appointed Vásquez as the Prime Minister of Peru. She was the sixth woman to hold this important position. She resigned on January 31, 2022.
