Marich Man Singh Shrestha (Nepali: मरिचमान सिंह श्रेष्ठ; 1 January 1942 – 15 August 2013) was an important Nepali politician. He served as the Prime Minister of Nepal from 1986 to 1990. He was the last Prime Minister during a time in Nepal known as the Panchayat system. This was a specific way the country was governed back then.
Marich Man Singh Shrestha was born in 1942 in Khalanga Bazar, Salyan, Nepal. Before becoming Prime Minister, he was the speaker of the Rastriya Panchayat from 1981 to 1985. He was also one of the few Prime Ministers of Nepal who was not from the Khas group. He was the first Newar person to hold the full title of Prime Minister.

Political Journey and Challenges
Leading Nepal as Prime Minister
Marich Man Singh Shrestha became the Prime Minister of Nepal on 15 June 1986. His time as leader was very challenging. One major event was an economic blockade imposed by India. This blockade lasted for sixteen months, starting on 23 March 1989.
Facing the Economic Blockade
During the blockade, Nepal faced a huge shortage of fuel. It was a very difficult time for the country. Despite the challenges, Prime Minister Shrestha worked hard to keep Nepal running. He is remembered for bringing in fuel by airplanes to help the country. This showed his determination not to give in to outside pressure.
Political Changes and Dismissal
His time as Prime Minister also saw a period of big political change. Many people in Nepal wanted more democracy. This led to a large public movement in 1989, known as the Mass Movement of 2046 BS. During this time, there were tensions between the government and those asking for more freedom.
Eventually, King Birendra removed him from his position. This happened because of the growing political unrest. After his dismissal, a new constitution was created. This new constitution allowed for direct elections to a parliament with two parts.
Later Life and Passing
Marich Man Singh Shrestha passed away on 15 August 2013. He had been receiving medical treatment in New Delhi, India. However, he wished to return to his home country. He was flown back to Kathmandu, Nepal. He died at Norvic Hospital in Kathmandu at 3:00 AM. The cause of his death was lung cancer.
