Marie Anne Éléonore de Bourbon (born December 22, 1690 – died August 30, 1760) was a French princess. She was the granddaughter of King Louis XIV. Marie Anne Éléonore became a nun and lived at the Abbey of Saint-Antoine-des-Champs. She signed her name as Marie Gabrielle Éléonore.
Early Life and Family
Marie Anne Éléonore was born at the famous Palace of Versailles in France. Her birthday was December 22, 1690. She was the oldest daughter of Louis, Duke of Bourbon, Prince of Condé and his wife Louise Françoise de Bourbon.
Because of her father's royal family, Marie Anne Éléonore was a "Princess of the Blood." This meant she was a very important member of the royal family. She was called Her Serene Highness. One of her younger sisters was Louise Élisabeth de Bourbon, who became the Princess of Conti.
Marie Anne Éléonore was known as Mademoiselle de Condé or Mademoiselle de Bourbon when she was young. This was because she was the oldest princess in the Condé branch of the royal family. Her brother, Louis Henri, Duke of Bourbon, later became a very important leader. He was the Prime Minister of France during the time of King Louis XV.
Life as a Nun
When Marie Anne Éléonore was 16 years old, she decided to become a nun. On May 6, 1706, she joined the Royal Abbey of Fontevraud. This abbey was located in a region of France called Anjou.
Later, in 1723, she became the Abbess of Saint-Antoine-des-Champs. An abbess is like the leader of a group of nuns in an abbey. The Abbey of Saint-Antoine-des-Champs had been an important religious place since the 1200s. As abbess, she was known as Madame de Bourbon.
Later Years and Legacy
Because she was a nun, Marie Anne Éléonore never got married. She also did not have any children. She lived a long life dedicated to her religious duties.
Marie Anne Éléonore de Bourbon passed away on August 30, 1760. She died in Villejuif, which is a suburb near Paris. She was buried at the Abbey of Saint-Antoine-des-Champs, where she had served as abbess for many years.
