Louis Reybaud

Marie Roch Louis Reybaud (born August 15, 1799 – died October 26 or 28, 1879) was a French writer, a thinker who studied how countries manage their money and resources (called a political economist), and a politician. He was born in a city called Marseille, France.

Who Was Louis Reybaud?

Louis Reybaud was an important French writer and thinker in the 1800s. He wrote many books and articles that looked at society and how it worked, often in a funny or critical way. He also spent time traveling and was involved in politics.

Early Life and Travels

After exploring places like the Levant (countries in the Middle East) and India, Louis Reybaud settled in Paris in 1829. He started writing for newspapers that had strong, new ideas. He also helped put together big books, like the Scientific and Military History of the French Expedition in Egypt (which was ten volumes long!) and Dumont d'Urville's Voyage Around the World.

Famous Books and Awards

In 1840, Reybaud published a book called Studies on Modern Reformers or Socialists. This book was so good that it won him the Montyon prize in 1841. Later, in 1850, he was invited to join a very important group of smart people called the Académie des sciences morales et politiques, who studied society and government.

One of his most famous books came out in 1843, titled Jérôme Paturot in Search of a Social Position. It was a very clever and funny story that made fun of society's problems, and it became incredibly popular.

Reybaud's Political Journey

In 1846, Louis Reybaud changed some of his political ideas. He was then chosen by the people of Marseille to be their representative in the government, known as a liberal deputy.

He was also an early member of a group called the Société d'économie politique, which was formed in 1842 by Pellegrino Rossi. This group discussed ideas about how countries manage their money and resources.

Later Works

Reybaud continued to write about society and economics. In 1848, he published another book about Jérôme Paturot, called Jérôme Paturot in Search of the Best of Republics. This book was a funny criticism of the new ideas about how a republic (a type of government) should work.

He also wrote other important books, including:

  • The Life of Employment (1855)
  • Industry in Europe (1856)
  • Studies on the System of Our Factories (1859)
  • Cotton: Its System, Its Problems (1863)

Louis Reybaud passed away in Paris.
