Early Life
Maria Teresa was born on January 31, 1756, at the Royal Palace of Turin in Italy. Her parents were Victor Amadeus of Savoy and Maria Antonia of Spain. She was given the name Maria Teresa at her baptism.
When she was born, her grandfather, Charles Emmanuel III of Sardinia, was the King of Sardinia. Her father was next in line to become king.
Marriage to the Count of Artois
Maria Teresa was engaged to Charles Philippe of France. He was the youngest grandson of Louis XV of France. Their wedding took place on November 16, 1773, at the famous Palace of Versailles.
At the French court, her sister-in-law, Marie Antoinette, was the most important woman. Maria Teresa's older sister, Marie Joséphine of Savoy, had married Charles Philippe's older brother. This meant Marie Joséphine had a higher rank than Maria Teresa.
Neither sister got along very well with Marie Antoinette. However, Maria Teresa was more liked than her sister, Marie Joséphine. People said Maria Teresa was quiet and not interested in many things.
Maria Teresa and Charles Philippe had four children together. Only two of them lived past childhood.
Life During the French Revolution
After the French Revolution began with the storming of the Bastille on July 14, 1789, Maria Teresa and her husband left France. She found safety in her home country of Savoy. Her father, who had become king in 1773, protected her there.
Later, she moved to Austria. She died in exile in Graz in 1805. She was buried in the Imperial Mausoleum near Graz cathedral. Her husband later became King Charles X of France in 1824.
