Maria Antonia of Spain (born María Antonia Fernanda on November 17, 1729 – died September 19, 1785) was a Spanish princess, also known as an Infanta. She was the youngest daughter of Philip V of Spain and Elisabeth Farnese.

In 1750, she married Victor Amadeus III of Sardinia. This made her the Queen consort of Sardinia when he became king. She was the mother of the last three kings of Sardinia from their main family line. In Italy, she is often called Maria Antonietta. Her full name was Maria Antonia Fernanda. She and Victor Amadeus III were a very happy couple and had 12 children together.

Her Royal Family

Maria Antonia was born into the House of Bourbon, a very important royal family in Spain. Her father was King Philip V of Spain, and her mother was Elisabeth Farnese. She grew up in the Royal Alcázar of Seville, a grand palace in Spain.

When she married Victor Amadeus III, she joined the House of Savoy. This was the royal family of Sardinia. She became the Duchess of Savoy first. Later, when her husband became king, she became the Queen of Sardinia.

Her Children

Maria Antonia and Victor Amadeus III had 12 children. Many of them grew up to play important roles in European royalty.

  • Charles Emmanuel IV of Sardinia (1751 – 1819): He became the King of Sardinia. He married Princess Marie Clotilde of France. They did not have any children.
  • Maria Elisabetta Carlotta of Savoy (1752 – 1755): She passed away when she was a baby.
  • Maria Giuseppina of Savoy (1753 – 1810): She married Louis Xavier of France, who was the Count of Provence. They also did not have children.
  • Amedeus Alexander of Savoy (1754 – 1755): He also passed away when he was a baby.
  • Maria Teresa of Savoy (1756 – 1805): She married Charles of France, the Count of Artois. They had children.
  • Maria Anna of Savoy (1757 – 1824): She married Prince Benedetto of Savoy, the Duke of Chablais. They did not have children.
  • Victor Emmanuel I of Sardinia (1759 – 1824): He became the King of Sardinia after his brother. He married Archduchess Maria Theresa of Austria-Este and they had children.
  • Maria Cristina Ferdinanda of Savoy (1760 – 1768): She passed away when she was a child.
  • Maurizio of Savoy (1762 – 1799): He never married and passed away from malaria.
  • Maria Carolina of Savoy (1764 – 1782): She married Antony, the Electoral Prince of Saxony. They did not have children.
  • Charles Felix of Sardinia (1765 – 1831): He became the King of Sardinia after his brother Victor Emmanuel I. He married Princess Maria Cristina of Naples and Sicily. They did not have children.
  • Giuseppe of Savoy (1766 – 1802): He never married and passed away from malaria.

Throughout her life, Maria Antonia held several important titles:

  • 17 November 1729 – 31 May 1750: She was known as Her Royal Highness The Infanta Doña Maria Antonia of Spain. This was her title as a Spanish princess.
  • 31 May 1750 – 20 February 1773: After her marriage, she became Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Savoy.
  • 20 February 1773 – 19 September 1785: When her husband became king, she became Her Majesty The Queen of Sardinia.
