Charles Emmanuel IV (born Carlo Emanuele Ferdinando Maria; 24 May 1751 – 6 October 1819) was the King of Sardinia from 1796 to 1802. He decided to give up his throne to his brother, Victor Emmanuel I. He was also related by marriage to French kings Louis XVI, Louis XVIII, and Charles X of France.

Biography

Early Life and Marriage

Charles Emmanuel was born at the Royal Palace of Turin, Italy. He was the oldest son of Victor Amadeus, who was the Duke of Savoy and later King of Sardinia. His mother was Maria Antonia Ferdinanda of Spain. From the time he was born until he became king, he was known as the "Prince of Piedmont".

In 1775, Charles Emmanuel married Marie Clotilde of France. She was the daughter of Louis, Dauphin of France, and the sister of King Louis XVI. Even though their marriage was arranged for political reasons, Charles Emmanuel and Marie Clotilde loved each other very much. Sadly, they were never able to have children.

Becoming King and Losing Land

Charles Emmanuel became king when his father died on 14 October 1796. But his time as king was difficult. In December 1798, French armies took over Turin. They forced Charles Emmanuel to give up all his lands on the Italian mainland. He had to move to the island of Sardinia.

The next year, he tried to get his land back in Piedmont, but he was not successful. He and his wife lived in Rome and Naples. They stayed as guests with the wealthy Colonna family.

Abdication and Later Life

On 7 March 1802, Charles Emmanuel's wife, Marie Clotilde, passed away. Her death affected him deeply. Because of his sadness, he decided to give up his throne on 4 June 1802. He passed the crown to his brother, Victor Emmanuel. Charles Emmanuel still kept the title of King, even though he no longer ruled.

He died at the Palazzo Colonna in Rome. He was buried in the Church of Sant'Andrea al Quirinale.
