Maria Teresa Rafaela of Spain (born June 11, 1726 – died July 22, 1746) was a Spanish princess, known as an Infanta of Spain. She later became the wife of Louis of France, who was the son of King Louis XV. Maria Teresa died at the young age of 20 while giving birth to her daughter. Her daughter also passed away at two years old, meaning Maria Teresa had no children who lived to adulthood. In France, she was often called Marie Thérèse.

Life of Maria Teresa Rafaela
Maria Teresa Rafaela was the second daughter of Philip V of Spain, who was the King of Spain, and Elisabeth Farnese. She was given the full name María Teresa Antonia Rafaela when she was baptized, but everyone knew her as María Teresa.
When she was older, she became engaged to Louis Ferdinand, Dauphin of France. A "Dauphin" was the title given to the oldest son of the King of France, who was next in line to the throne. Their official wedding took place at the grand Palace of Versailles in France on February 23, 1745.
This marriage was arranged to help improve the relationship between France and Spain. This was important because King Louis XV of France had previously decided not to marry Maria Teresa Rafaela's older sister, Mariana Victoria of Spain.
On July 19, 1746, Maria Teresa, known as Marie Thérèse Raphaëlle in France, gave birth to a daughter. Sadly, Maria Teresa herself passed away just three days later, on July 22, at Versailles. Her baby daughter died two years later in 1748.
After Maria Teresa's death, her husband, the Dauphin, married again to Princess Maria Josepha of Saxony. She became the mother of Louis XVI of France, who would later become king. Maria Teresa was buried at the Royal Basilica of Saint Denis, which is a famous burial place for French royalty located outside Paris.
Her Only Child
Maria Teresa and Louis had one daughter:
- Marie Thérèse of France (born July 19, 1746 – died April 27, 1748). She was named after her mother. She passed away when she was very young and was simply known as "Madame Royale".
Royal Titles and Styles
