Mariel Hemingway (born November 22, 1961) is an American actress who became famous as a teenager. She started acting at age 14 in the movie Lipstick (1976). Her role earned her a nomination for a Golden Globe Award, a major award for movies and television.
A few years later, she starred in the movie Manhattan (1979). Her performance was so good that she was nominated for an Academy Award and a BAFTA Award, which are two of the biggest honors in the film industry.
Later in her career, Hemingway began to focus on helping people understand mental health. She was part of a documentary called Running from Crazy that explored her own family's experiences with mental health challenges.

Early Life and Family
Mariel Hemingway was born in Mill Valley, California. Her parents were Jack Hemingway and Byra Louise "Puck" Whittlesey. She grew up in a very famous family. Her grandfather was Ernest Hemingway, one of the most well-known American writers of the 20th century.
She has two older sisters, Joan "Muffet" Hemingway and Margot "Margaux" Hemingway. Margaux was also an actress and a model.
A Career in Movies and Television
Starting as a Teen Star
Hemingway's very first movie role was in Lipstick, where she acted alongside her real-life sister, Margaux. Even though it was her first film, people noticed her talent. This led to a nomination for a Golden Globe Award as "Best Newcomer."
Her most famous role came in the film Manhattan. In this romantic comedy, she played a high school student named Tracy. Her acting was praised by critics, and she was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress.
Famous Roles in the 1980s
In 1982, Hemingway starred in the movie Personal Best. She played a talented track-and-field athlete. The film was known for exploring new and interesting topics for its time.
The next year, she played the real-life model Dorothy Stratten in the movie Star 80 (1983). The film told the story of Stratten's life. In 1987, she appeared in Superman IV: The Quest for Peace as a character named Lacy Warfield.
Work in Television and Later Films
From 1991 to 1993, Hemingway starred in the TV show Civil Wars. She played a lawyer, and her role earned her another Golden Globe nomination. She also acted with the musician John Mellencamp in the 1991 movie Falling from Grace.
Over the years, she has appeared in many different movies and TV shows. She played a lesbian or bisexual character in several projects, including Personal Best and episodes of the TV shows Roseanne and Crossing Jordan. Advocacy for Mental Health
Hemingway has worked to raise awareness about mental health. She was a key part of the 2013 documentary Running from Crazy. The film, produced by the Oprah Winfrey Network, shared her family's story of dealing with mental health issues.
For her work on the documentary, she received a humanitarian award from the San Diego Film Festival. In 2015, she wrote a book about her life called Out Came the Sun.
Personal Life
In 1984, Hemingway married Stephen Crisman. They have two daughters, Dree Hemingway and Langley Fox, who are both models. The couple divorced in 2009.
Since 2011, she has been in a relationship with Bobby Williams. Together, they have written a self-help book. Hemingway also practices Transcendental Meditation, a type of meditation that helps with relaxation and focus.
