History of Mariemont
Before Europeans settled in this area in 1786, a Native American village called Madisonville site was located nearby. You can also find an old pioneer cemetery next to the Mariemont Community Church.
Mariemont was created by a woman named Mary Emery. She worked with a famous planner, John Nolen, and 25 top American architects. They started building on April 23, 1923. Mary Emery spent about seven million dollars of her own money to buy the land. She dreamed of building a community like an English "garden city." This kind of city is designed to have lots of green spaces and a mix of homes. Mary Emery hoped it would be a place for people from different economic backgrounds. She wanted to have both single-family homes and affordable apartments.
However, the dream of welcoming everyone didn't quite happen. The cost of building was very high. This made rents more expensive than Mary Emery had hoped. Also, like many planned communities built before 1960, Mariemont was mostly for white residents at first.
In 2008, the American Planning Association called Mariemont a "Great Neighbourhood." They praised its unique style, how easy it is to walk around, and how much its citizens get involved.
