Mariette Hartley (born June 21, 1940) is an American actress who has starred in many films and TV shows. She is well-known for her roles in movies like Ride the High Country (1962), Marnie (1964), and Marooned (1969). On television, she was in the soap opera Peyton Place and the Western show Gunsmoke. Many people also remember her from popular TV commercials with actor James Garner.

Early Life and Education

Mariette Hartley was born in Weston, Connecticut, on June 21, 1940. Her mother, Mary "Polly" Ickes, was a manager and saleswoman. Her father, Paul Hembree Hartley, worked in advertising. Mariette's grandfather was John B. Watson, a famous American psychologist. He helped start a way of studying how people behave, called behaviorism.

Mariette grew up in Weston, Connecticut, which is a nice town not far from Manhattan. She went to Staples High School in Westport, Connecticut, and was very active in the school's theater group. Later, she graduated from the Carnegie Institute of Technology in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, in 1965.

Mariette Hartley started acting when she was just 13 years old at the White Barn Theatre in Norwalk. As a teenager, she learned a lot from a famous stage actress named Eva Le Gallienne. She also performed at the American Shakespeare Festival.

Her first movie appearance was a small, uncredited part in the Western film From Hell to Texas (1958). In the early 1960s, she moved to Los Angeles and joined a theater group at UCLA.

Mariette's first credited movie role was in the 1962 Western Ride the High Country. This role was a big deal and even earned her a nomination for a BAFTA award. She continued to appear in movies throughout the 1960s. She played the main character in Drums of Africa (1963) and had important supporting roles in Alfred Hitchcock's thriller Marnie (1964) and the drama Marooned (1969).

Television Roles in the 1960s

During the 1960s, Mariette was a guest star on many popular TV shows. She appeared in Gunsmoke, The Twilight Zone, and Star Trek (as Zarabeth in the episode "All Our Yesterdays"). In 1965, she had a big role as Dr. Claire Morton in 32 episodes of the TV show Peyton Place.

Mariette kept acting in films and TV shows during the 1970s. She was in Westerns like Barquero (1970) and The Magnificent Seven Ride (1972). She also appeared on many TV series, including The Love Boat, Little House on the Prairie, and Columbo. She starred in two episodes of Columbo with Peter Falk.

In 1977, Mariette was nominated for her first Emmy Award for her role in the TV movie The Last Hurrah. A year later, she won an Emmy Award for her role as Dr. Carolyn Fields in an episode of The Incredible Hulk. In this episode, her character married the Hulk's alter ego, played by Bill Bixby. She was nominated for another Emmy the next year for her performance in The Rockford Files.

In 1983, Mariette worked with Bill Bixby again in the TV comedy Goodnight, Beantown. This show ran for two seasons and earned her another Emmy nomination. In 1987, she was a co-host for ten months on CBS's The Morning Program, a weekday news show.

Later Career and Recent Work

In the 1990s, Mariette toured in a play called Deathtrap. She continued to appear in many TV movies and guest-starred on shows like Murder, She Wrote (1992), Nash Bridges (2000), and NCIS (2005). She also had ongoing roles in the soap opera One Life to Live and the crime drama Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.

From 1995 to 2015, Mariette hosted a long-running TV show called Wild About Animals. This was an educational program about animals. In 2006, she performed her own one-woman show in Los Angeles. More recently, in 2018, Mariette began a recurring role on the TV show 9-1-1. She played Patricia Clark, a character with Alzheimer's disease.

In the late 1970s and early 1980s, Mariette Hartley became very famous for a series of TV commercials. She appeared with actor James Garner in ads for Polaroid cameras. They had such great chemistry on screen that many people thought they were married in real life! Mariette even had a T-shirt made that said, "I am not Mrs. James Garner." James Garner's real wife then jokingly had a T-shirt made that said, "I am Mrs. James Garner."

Mariette also guest-starred in an episode of James Garner's TV show The Rockford Files in 1979.

Honors and Personal Life

Mariette Hartley received an honorary degree from Rider College in 1993.

Mariette has been married three times. She married Jerry Sroka in 2005. They even wrote and starred in a romantic comedy movie together in 2022, based on their own lives. Mariette has two children from a previous marriage.

In her 1990 book, Breaking the Silence, Mariette shared her experiences with mental health challenges. She has also spoken publicly about having bipolar disorder. She helped start the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention and is now a national spokesperson for the organization. She works to help people understand mental health conditions and get the support they need.
