Mary Loretta Hartley (born June 21, 1940) is an American actress who has appeared in many movies and television shows. She is well known for her role in the Western movie Ride the High Country (1962) and for appearing in an episode of Star Trek: The Original Series.
Many people also remember her from a series of popular TV commercials with actor James Garner in the 1970s and 1980s. She won an Emmy Award for her role in the TV series The Incredible Hulk.

Early Life and Education
Mariette Hartley was born in Weston, Connecticut. Her father, Paul Hartley, was an executive, and her mother, Polly, was a manager. Her grandfather was John B. Watson, a famous psychologist who studied how people behave.
Hartley started acting when she was just 13 years old at a local theater. A famous actress named Eva Le Gallienne coached her. She was very active in her high school's theater group. She graduated from the Carnegie Institute of Technology, a part of Carnegie Mellon University, in 1965.
Acting Career
Starting on Stage and Screen
Hartley's movie career began with the Western Ride the High Country in 1962. Her performance in the movie earned her a nomination for a BAFTA award, which is a major British film award. She acted in other movies during the 1960s, including Alfred Hitchcock's thriller Marnie (1964) and the space drama Marooned (1969).
She also appeared on many TV shows. She was a guest star on the Western series Gunsmoke five times. She also had roles in Bonanza and The Twilight Zone. One of her most famous early TV roles was in Star Trek: The Original Series. In the 1969 episode "All Our Yesterdays", she played Zarabeth, a woman who becomes a love interest for the character Spock.
Television Star

In the 1970s, Hartley continued to act in both movies and TV shows. She appeared in Westerns like Barquero (1970) and TV shows like Little House on the Prairie and Columbo.
In 1978, she guest-starred on The Incredible Hulk. She played Dr. Carolyn Fields, a psychologist who marries Bill Bixby's character. For this role, Hartley won a Primetime Emmy Award. She later worked with Bixby again on the sitcom Goodnight, Beantown in 1983.
In 1987, she became a co-host of the CBS morning news show, The Morning Program, with Rolland Smith.
Recent Work
Hartley has continued to act in recent years. She has had guest roles on shows like Murder, She Wrote, NCIS, and Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. From 1995 to 2015, she hosted a TV documentary series called Wild About Animals.
In 2018, she had a recurring role on the show 9-1-1. She played Patricia Clark, the mother of one of the main characters.
Famous Commercials
In the late 1970s and early 1980s, Hartley and actor James Garner starred in many popular commercials for Polaroid cameras. They acted so well together that many viewers thought they were married in real life.
This became such a common mistake that Hartley started wearing a T-shirt that said, "I am not Mrs. James Garner." The joke continued when she made a shirt for her son that said, "I am not James Garner's Child." James Garner's real wife even had a shirt made that said, "I am Mrs. James Garner."
Life Outside of Acting
Hartley has been married three times and has two children. In 2005, she married Jerry Sroka. They later wrote and starred in a movie based on their lives called Our Almost Completely True Story.
Hartley is also known for her work supporting mental health. She has spoken publicly to raise awareness about bipolar disorder and helped start the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. She works with the foundation to help others and encourage understanding of these important health issues.
