Marijke van Warmerdam (born March 12, 1959, in Nieuwer-Amstel) is a famous artist from the Netherlands. She creates many different types of art, including films, photos, paintings, and sculptures.

About Marijke van Warmerdam

Marijke van Warmerdam started making her unique art in the 1990s. She is most known for her short film loops. These are videos that play over and over again, like a GIF. She first became famous for these films at the Venice Bienniale in 1995.

One of her famous films, Douche (which means Shower), was shown for a long time at Schiphol Airport railway station. Thousands of travelers saw her film while waiting for their trains.

Marijke van Warmerdam doesn't tell stories in her films. Instead, she focuses on simple, everyday things. You might see a hat dancing in the wind, a drop of milk slowly mixing into water, or a red suitcase sliding down a snowy mountain. By showing these simple moments again and again, they become almost like a dream. They also start to feel like sculptures because of their endless repetition.

Her sculptures, photos, and paintings are similar to her film loops. They are often simple and show her fun, surprising way of looking at the world.

Marijke van Warmerdam also helps teach other artists. She is an advisor at the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam. She is also a Professor of Art at the State Academy of Fine Arts in Karlsruhe, Germany.

In 1995, Marijke van Warmerdam represented the Netherlands at the Venice Biennale. She was there with two other artists, Marlene Dumas and Maria Roosen.

She has also shown her work at many other big international art events. These include the Sydney, Berlin, and Gwangju Biennales. She also participated in Documenta X, which is a very important art show.

Marijke van Warmerdam has had her own art shows at famous museums. These include the Van Abbemuseum in Eindhoven and the ICA in Boston. Her art has also been shown at MAC in Marseille and The State Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, Russia.

A special collection of her work has been shown in several places. These include the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen in Rotterdam, the Serralves Museum of Contemporary Art in Porto, and Kunsthalle Düsseldorf.
