Life as an Artist

Marlene Dumas was born in 1953 in Cape Town, South Africa. She grew up in Kuils River in the Western Cape. Her father owned a vineyard there.

When she was a child, Marlene saw the system of Apartheid. This was a time in South Africa when people were separated based on their race. She started painting in 1973. Her early art often showed her thoughts on politics and her identity as a white Afrikaans woman in South Africa.

Artistic Training

Marlene studied art at the University of Cape Town from 1972 to 1975. After that, she went to Ateliers '63 in Haarlem, Netherlands. This art school is now in Amsterdam. She also studied psychology at the University of Amsterdam in 1979 and 1980.

Today, Marlene Dumas lives and works in the Netherlands. She is one of the most well-known artists in that country.

Dumas in Film and Books

Marlene Dumas has appeared in several films. These include Miss Interpreted (1997) and The Future is Now! (2011). She was also featured in Alice Neel (2007).

Many books have included her illustrations. Some of these are Marlene Dumas: Myths and Mortals and Marlene Dumas: The Image as Burden.

Her Unique Painting Style

Dumas's paintings often look like portraits of people. However, they usually show an emotional feeling rather than a specific person. Her art explores important topics. These include race, feelings of guilt or innocence, violence, and tenderness.

Her style is similar to older Romanticism art. She uses loose brushstrokes in her work. This can make parts of her art look a bit distorted. But it also adds great detail.

Marlene often uses a "wet-on-wet" painting method. This means she applies thin layers of paint with thicker ones. She mostly uses oil paints on canvas and ink on paper. Her subjects vary greatly. She paints everything from newborn babies to models and famous people.

Recognized Achievements

In 1985, Marlene Dumas sold her painting Jule-die Vrou. This sale made her one of only three living female artists at the time to have a painting sell for over $1 million.

Dumas has also taught art at several schools. These include the Academie voor Beeldende Vorming (ABV) in Tilburg. She also taught at the Rijksakademie Van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam.

Her artwork can be found in major art collections. These include the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Her paintings were also part of the "Women Painting Women" exhibition in 2022. This show was held at the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth.
