Discovering The Modern Art Museum

A Look Back: The Museum's History

The Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth began its journey in 1892. It was first known as the "Fort Worth Public Library and Art Gallery." Over the years, its name changed a few times, and it moved to different spots in Fort Worth.

The main goal of the museum is to collect, show, and help people understand art from after World War II. This includes art made using all sorts of materials and styles.

The Building: A Work of Art Itself

The museum's current home is a special building. It was designed by a Japanese architect named Tadao Ando. This amazing building first opened its doors to visitors on December 14, 2002.

Michael Auping, who was a main curator at the museum for many years, worked closely with Ando. They spent five years making sure the inside of the building would be perfect for showing art. The building has three long sections that sit in a reflecting pond. It offers about 53,000 square feet of space just for art exhibits!

In 2019, a magazine called Architectural Digest named this building the Best Designed Building in Texas. The Modern is located in Fort Worth's Cultural District. It's right next to other famous museums like the Kimbell Art Museum and the Amon Carter Museum.

What Art Can You See?
