Marilyn Tucker Quayle (born July 29, 1949) is an American lawyer and writer. She is married to Dan Quayle, who was the 44th Vice President of the United States. Marilyn Quayle served as the Second Lady of the United States from 1989 to 1993.

Early Life and Education

Marilyn Tucker grew up in Indianapolis, Indiana. She was the fourth of six children. Her parents, Mary Alice and Warren Samuel Tucker, were both doctors. She had a strong Christian upbringing.

She attended Broad Ripple High School. Then, she earned a bachelor's degree in political science from Purdue University. While in college, she was a pompom girl. She was also the treasurer of her freshman class.

Marilyn later went to law school at night. She earned a law degree (J.D.) from Indiana University Robert H. McKinney School of Law. There, she met Dan Quayle. They were assigned to work together on a project. They quickly fell in love and married on November 18, 1972. In 1974, both Marilyn and Dan passed their bar exams.

Marilyn Quayle's Career and Public Service

After law school, Marilyn and Dan moved to Huntington, Indiana. They opened their own law firm called Quayle and Quayle. Marilyn did most of the legal work. Dan worked for his father's newspaper and prepared to enter politics.

In 1976, Dan was elected to Congress as a Republican. They then closed their law practice. In 1980, he was elected to the Senate.

In 1988, Dan Quayle became Vice President. He served with President George H. W. Bush. Marilyn was always a close advisor to her husband. She also campaigned on her own during the presidential election.

As the Second Lady, she played a traditional role. She was a hostess and an active mother to their three young children. She also worked for important causes. For example, she promoted early diagnosis of breast cancer. Her own mother had passed away from breast cancer.

With her sister Nancy, Marilyn also wrote a novel. It was a thriller called Embrace the Serpent. It was about the wife of a vice president.

During the 1992 presidential campaign, Marilyn was very active. She gave a speech at the Republican National Convention. She spent over 40 days campaigning. Her speeches often focused on "family values". She was very popular with conservative voters.

Bush and Quayle lost the election that year. The Quayles moved back to Huntington, Indiana. Marilyn joined a law firm in Indianapolis. Later, they moved to Arizona.

In 1996, Marilyn Quayle narrated an advertisement for a political candidate in Indiana. In 2010, she narrated another advertisement for a candidate in Georgia. In 2011, she reportedly contacted the Governor of Arizona. This was about a plan that affected her son, who was a Congressman.

Personal Life

The Quayles live in Paradise Valley, Arizona. They have three children. Their two sons are Tucker and Benjamin. Benjamin served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 2011 to 2013. Their daughter is named Corinne.
